Our latest photo series captures what girlhood means for us. Girlhood is much more than the patriarchal understanding of centering men in female life. In fact, friendships lie at the core of girlhood, providing women emotional, social and political safe spaces. Those bonds are integral because women still operate within all-time unsafe environments, ranging from subtle comments, the denial of equal opportunities to physical violence. Female friendships, especially between women of color, are so important because they generate mutual empowerment. They function as communities and enable us to experience life beyond the (mental or physical) presence of men. This is why we aim to offer new narratives through a shared language, humor, style and daily life.

We’ve captured the stores that shape our everyday belonging in Frankfurt, only to realize that we take the existence of these sites for granted. In fact, these are cultural institutions.

Most of us think of cultural institutions as formal spaces -exhibtions, museums, theaters- catered to and inhabited by white social realities. This is why, we are not aware of the cultural institutions that surround and organize our daily life. Barber shops, local supermarkets and bakeries demonstrate how culture is not curated but, instead, lived.

These spaces are the archives of migration and belonging, yet they are never recognized as institutions of cultural significance. It is time to rethink what culture really means and who gets to define it.
