Fun fact about me: some of my earliest musical influences from a very young age were Charles Ives, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, and Norma Winstone.

Last night with the Third Law Collective, I had the incredible opportunity to wear those influences on my sleeve and share a large body of my work in poetry, visual art, and musical composition. It was magical. Its not easy for a large group of people in an ensemble to be, and stay, so singularly dedicated to the moment and to the work like this. To the band, thank you for trusting me with this evening, it was an honor and a privilege. I heard spaces in the music where each of you were able to open up into your honest self, and places where we all willfully submitted to the larger communal goal before us. Thank you for that. You are all so inspiring and you may not realize it but that is all we need to keep building the places and the contexts where we can show the world what we are really all about. I could go on....

To the audience, thank you for supporting this artistic endeavor. Your presence is crucial to complete the circle of understanding. This cannot be overstated.

Here is a clip from our rehearsal for May's in Summer's Arms, a multi-disciplinary and multi-media suite I've put together for the Third Law Collective. We will be performing it on Saturday June 13th at the Bop Stop. This is my piece called Lawrence.

In this tune, I am setting words by D.H. Lawrence from his novel Lady Chatterley's Lover. While infamous for its explicit and sexual content, the book is at its core an anti-war novel. Sir Clifford represents a broken civilization in the shadow of the aftermath of the first world war, physically paralyzed from the waist down, intellectually hyper-active, and obsessed with industrialized success. His character is completely separated from the creative, emotional, and physical truths of life. The settings of coal mines and polluted countrysides reflects the mindset of the elite and ruling class, to which Sir Clifford belongs, that their victory in the war affirms their belief that people can be reduced to industrial labor and their capital production. Connie's character, whose own words are used exclusively in the tune, represents the defiance of this intellectualized elite class, the class willing to fight and battle over borders and questions of who controls who. She is the return to the crucial human connection which has been lost in a violent age. Her intimate life is the ultimate rebuttal against the death-obsessed and destructive civilization run by those with power to wage war.

There are themes throughout the whole suite of May's in Summer's Arms which grapple with this form of survival in the midst of a destructive age. Maybe I will share more of that throughout the week, maybe I will share more themes present in the suite also...

But for now, enjoy these incredible sounds. @bradwagnernet is soloing beautifully and @raquelromanrodri.voice is singing marvelously here. Maybe these thoughts might resonate with you, maybe the music will allow you to have the space to feel something like this within yourself.

I'm in love with this band. They sound amazing and I am a very happy composer these days.

We are two weeks away from our next monthly concert series performance. May 28th, new and original music from NE Ohio composers, 7pm at the Bop Stop.

We are also very excited to announce a special program we will be performing on June 13th at the Bop Stop.
