Good People - 3.5⭐

True Crime adjacent, insinuated alleged honor killing? The book had the ingredients but maybe left the oven on too long.

The story is dished out in eyewitness, secondhand accounts and snippets of news articles following an 'event'. As a narrative structure, the story mostly works, it's compelling and vague to start but sacrifices character development and forward plot momentum a bit too much.

By the second half of the book, you're interested but I felt like I was mostly just trying to finish it.

A good novel, a promising author with an interesting perspective but a tad overhyped.

Let's say September was a tad underwhelming in terms of my overall enjoyment of the books but it definitely ended on a high note.

Theo of Golden - 5⭐

Elderly Theo arrives in Golden and bewitches the town with his mysterious generosity.

Maybe a case of the right book at the right time but I absolutely loved this. It was an exquisitely charming and superbly narrated story.

It reminded me greatly of The Alchemist with a mix of The Correspondent and Whistler thrown in, which is to say, I think it was lovely.

Perhaps a tad saccharine, it is nonetheless delightful. The characters and their little stories are tiny beacons of hope in the world have today. It stays positive remains light on adversity but Theo and his goodness make him a protagonist you can't help but root for.

Theo is a man of faith and the book takes a little time to explore this in relation to his actions. I felt like it fit the tone of the book and the character of Theo well but I've seen quite a negative response in some reviews. At the end of the day, some people don't want to hear about it at all and can't get past any mentions whatsoever.

If you've read it, I hope you enjoyed, if you haven't yet, I hope you will, it's a tremendous book that will leave you with a smile on your face. by @this.guy.books

The Good Parts - 3⭐

A pill to make you forget, to start over. Would you take it? Could you make a lost love fall for you all over again? A premise incredibly similar to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I was eager to pick this up.

Ultimately I liked the questions this book wanted to ask more than I liked the book itself. It was a cute love story but never flourished; there wasn't really any speculative fiction, nor much romance to be honest.

The whole thing felt very choreographed, it was entertaining to read but left so much unrealized potential on the table.

The obvious question to ask... Could you ever see yourself taking a pill that would make you forget everything about your life? by @this.guy.books

Please Enjoy Your Stay - 2⭐

Thank you to @atriabooks & @netgalley for the opportunity to review in exchange for an honest review.

All the ingredients were there but unfortunately this one ended up being a bit undercooked and flat for my tastes.

Without spoilers let's just say it's murder mystery adjacent set in a gothic castle in Austria. Sadly, there isn't much exploration of the setting or the occasional attempt to make it sound spooky.

We don't get to know any of the characters, there is very little development and it feels very much like an exercise in 'this is the plot and things happen to people in order to serve it'.

I was also left questioning the logic and general decision making of almost everybody involved. It didn't really elicit a passionate response but still, it was hard to imagine real people acting the way the did.

On to the next one.

The House in the Pines - 1.5⭐

Oh boy, this one just did not hit for me.

The synopsis is intriguing, girls dropping dead in front of the same man, years apart... But I think that was the pitch and someone tried to stretch it into a full novel.

Unfortunately, it's a bit of a hot mess. The writing is scrappy, the characters are thin with inconsistent motivations and the alternating timelines are arbitrary.

It just doesn't feel real; the main character's behavior is up and down and ultimately nothing gets resolved in the end.

It's short but a slog with very few houses or pines at all.

Her One Regret - 4⭐

In anticipation of an upcoming release, I though I would start this series by Donna Freitas. It ended up being extremely topical and such an interesting story in the context of what is happening in the news these days (Clancy).

When a mother disappears and a baby is found alone in a parking lot, questions begin to arise as to whether or not she was taken or chose to leave.

The conversation is an important one to be having (not just now) about motherhood  expectations and the role fathers should be playing in the raising of a child. Is it okay for mother's to regret having children?

It attempts to demistify or at least lift the stigma about post partum conditions; I feel like the ideas it wants to talk about worked in spite of a few poorly executed B plots.

I feel like this novel benefited from an absolute banger audiobook narration from Victoria Villareal and it makes me even for excited for the next entry in the series.

The Truth About Ruby Cooper - 3.5⭐

I sat with this one for a few days before composing a review. I liked it but perhaps didn't love it?

On the whole, Liz Nugent is a brilliant writer with an absolute banger body of work. It much the same here, the writing is great, yet in the end it's a bit closer to Skin Deep than Strange Sally Diamond.

It details the life and fallout after Ruby is raped as a teenager. The implications are far reaching and abundantly triggering. I can't go into much detail but it covers a lot of time which may come at the expense of really getting to know the characters or understanding why they are the way they are.

In the end, it's a solid, well written book but didn't quite stand out as one of my favorites.

📚August Wrap-Up📚

Better late than never edition.

August was a great month for reading but the past few weeks I've been absolutely slammed at work and had a hard time getting this update out.

🏆 Favorite - You Are Here - Such a great novel about mature friendships blossoming into something

🤫 The Silence Keepers (Wildwood Book 3) - this was awesome but I didn't formally rate it because it was Beta Read. Looking forward to full release next year!
