Black American Princess: The Virgo Edition

I get in front of the camera once a year to celebrate me ✨. My job is to curate for others so my birthday gift to myself each year is to curate something special for myself. This year’s inspiration is heritage. As I enter into my last year of my 20’s I reflected on all the elements that make me who I am. I stand strong in who I am because of the matriarchy that raised me and my Jamaican heritage that instills pride.

Likkle but mi TALAWA! Grew up in a Jamaican household & that still transcends through who I am in adulthood. Look 1 of this year’s birthday shoot is inspired by that. Talawa is a Jamaican word that means strong & mighty.

The ideas I had in my head came to life soooo well! Thank you to the team of professionals that helped me pull it off ✨

SN: the kitchen I grew up in the Bronx was this color yellow so shooting at this house felt super nostalgic.

🖤 @vivetofficial debut collection was a 10/10. My heart is so insanely happy for @kaicenat ✨. My birthday is in a few hours and I’m feeling so nostalgic. Looking back on baby Akilah from daycare to college…she had no idea what was in store. A life she could’ve never dreamt up. Walking in my purpose along side so many people I’m blessed to know. God is good fr✨. #happy

Styled the dancers for @davido ft @leonthomas ‘Tell Everybody’ music video.

This was one of my favorite projects I worked on last month. When I got the call, it was an absolute yesss. Loved the concept and so happy I was able to add my wardrobe magic to this shoot ✨. Got to work with the AMAZINGLY talented Director, @emmanueladjei_

Let Kaiya Cook trailer featuring the lovely @kaiyacenat

We shot this trailer last year and it was so much fun building out this wardrobe world. I styled the cast in vintage 70s pieces sourced at our local costume houses @kalicollectionatl & Universal Costumes. It was important for there to be a stark difference between the family before and after they ate Kaiya’s cooking so for our black and white scenes I opted for muted colors, stiffer/buttoned up clothing and minimal accessories. Once the family got a taste of Kaiya’s cooking, it infused her flavor and grooviness into their eating experience so I incorporated color, fun accessories and flowy fabrics.
