What stories linger beyond the frame?

Join us on 27 September for “The Frame Cannot Hold the Ghosts”, a screening and reading programme with 2025 Prince Claus Fund Seed Awardee and Exchanges with @w139amsterdam resident @thisisdewkn, alongside @antibart and @kuuhulluutta.

Expanding on their collective installation, the programme brings together three short films, an interview with a gimp, and excerpts from a hybrid nonfiction work in progress—exploring their distinct yet connected approaches to narration and storytelling.

Komtouch is the second artist taking part in our Exchanges residency with W139 this year, alongside the group exhibition “The Nature of Remembering”, on view from 1 September to 1 November 2026.

Currently in Amsterdam for the artist residency at @w139amsterdam as part of @princeclausfund Exchange Program which includes participation in the group exhibition The Nature of Remembering initiated by @lwlk_ in conversation with @megan.hoetger

For the exhibition, @antibart @kuuhulluutta and I are showing a version of our works together about rubber as fetish commodity and commodity fetishism as well as its production, entangled myths and history in Southeast Asia.

The residency will culminate on Sunday, September 27th for The Frame Cannot Hold the Ghosts, a special public screening and reading program expanding on our practice in moving image, poetry, and Southeast Asian history.

This Sunday at W139: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘴, a screening and reading programme with Komtouch Napattaloong (@thisisdewkn), Bart Seng Wen Long (@antibart), and Kaisa Saarinen (@kuuhulluutta)!

Extending from the trio’s collective installation on view in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨, the programme will bring focus to their distinct yet sympathetic forms of narration and storytelling. Featured will be three short films, an interview with a gimp, and excerpts from a hybrid nonfiction-in-progress.

Lingering within the hallowed space of the make-shift rubber tapper shelter in the main exhibition gallery, between the CRT monitor and the modern flatscreen and the stacks of anarchronistic agitprop, are persistent ghosts biding their time to re-manifest: as kinky anecdotes of a middle-aged Singaporean rubberist; a veteran camcorder on its last pixels; eccentric mythologies that have built and continue to sustain a nation’s spirit; the dreams sustained by freebleeding trees night after night.

The residency of Komtouch Napattaloong is part of the Exchanges programme by the Prince Claud Fund (@princeclausfund), with the support of the Amsterdam City Council.

Ticket: €7,50
Student and solidarity ticket: €5

Corroded pixels struggle to form an image as they move through Cold War promises of development in rural Thailand, haunted by archival voices.

𝙀𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙨 (2025), 15 min
A Singaporean man mixes up two memories: one of a colonial-era propaganda film about communist insurgencies in rubber plantations, and another of his Malaysian ex-playmate.

Phi Pattana (In Sum) will celebrate its world premiere tonight as part of Forum Expanded's Program 3.

Corroded pixels intertwine with archival Cold War images, assembling a partial account of “development” in Thailand’s northeast. Voices drawn from Thailand’s Role in the Vietnam War and images from the Shell Film Company’s Mekong River project (1964), together with Isan Film Group’s Tongpan (1977), appear, distort and thin out. At irregular moments, rural farmers appear and speak plainly with the cameraperson, who is working with a nearly expired point-and-shoot digital camera. Texts conjured from these broken images form a restless presence that is part-archive, part-machine, part-memory. The film began with an outdated consumer digital camera discovered in the drawers of the filmmaker’s old family home. The footage was gathered during its final period of use. Its corroded sensor struggles to form a “perfect” image, producing distortions that run alongside the narratives of development it encounters.

[English below] Hà Nội đón cơn mưa đá bất chợt chiều tối qua ngay trước giờ chiếu phim, Á Space vô cùng cảm ơn các bạn khán giả đã vượt mưa lớn và đường xá xa xôi tới xem phim và trò chuyện cùng Komtouch Napattaloong.

____

Á Space would like to thank everyone who braved the sudden hailstorm in Hanoi yesterday evening, just before the screening, to come and watch the films and engage in conversation with Komtouch Napattaloong.
The four short films, spanning a decade of practice, revealed both the persistence and the shifts in his filmmaking. He also shared insights into this transition, from his early documentary works to more experimental practices, including video art and essayistic films. The secret film revealed at the end is his most recent work, completed in 2026; in his words, it was “a special screening occasion for the context of Vietnam.”
Á Space would like to thank Komtouch, wish him the very best with his upcoming feature-length project, and look forward to seeing his future works!

Very glad to share that ผีพัฒนา 𝙄𝙣 𝙎𝙪𝙢 has been selected for the International Competition at the 22nd @25fps_festival in Zagreb this September.

"A selection of daring and reflexive works from all over the world...” It is a privilege to have the film screen alongside such an incredible lineup of experimental work!
