Further Education and Training (FET) can offer real pathways into careers and studying at degree level.

It’s great to see so many post-Leaving Cert (PLC) students highlighting how their course supported their next steps after school. For some learners, a PLC course helped them decide which area to pursue; for others, it opened the door to direct employment or higher education. What they have in common is that their course built their confidence and independence, introduced them to new friends, and helped them to prepare for the future.

The latest Further Education and Training (FET) Insights Report from SOLAS shows that FET graduates are achieving really strong outcomes. More than 90% of students who completed a QQI Level 5 or 6 course, also known as a PLC, in 2021/2022 were either working, continuing their studies, or doing both a year after graduating.

Did you know that Further Education and Training (FET) is available in every county through the Education and Training Boards (ETBs)?

This enables students who are not yet ready or able to move away from home to further their studies without having to relocate or face long commutes.

Post-Leaving Cert courses (PLCs) are Level 5 to 6 affordable one to two-year courses great for students looking for a pathway to university, a route to direct employment or to explore an area they're interested in.

What an incredible three days we had putting the spotlight on Further Education and Training (FET) and Apprenticeships at WorldSkills Ireland and Higher Options this year!

🧑‍🎓 We were delighted to meet with so many students at our FET stands, with a total of over 60,000 students and guidance counsellors visiting both events over the three - day events to learn about diverse pathways available after school.

As always it was brilliant to see such a string presents of FET and apprenticeship pathways from the FET Career Talks with post-Leaving certificate (PLC) learners, Apprentices and Tertiary Degree students, the Apprentice of the Year Heroes Stage, national skills competitions and Try-A-Skill areas.

🙌 A huge thank you to the students visited our stands to learn more about FET, to our Career Talk panellists sharing their experiences of FET and to all of our staff and partners made this year’s events so successful.

It's the last day of Higher Options Ireland in the RDS!

Find out about the many pathways after school that are available outside the points race at the Careers Talk taking place at 12 in Talk Hall 4. There you will hear from an apprentice, Tertiary Degree and Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) learner about Insurance and Politics, Society and Media.

✨ WorldSkills Ireland 2026 and Higher Options Ireland kick off next Wednesday, and we're looking forward to hearing from the PLC learners, apprentices and tertiary degree students who will be speaking at both events.
