Beit Chabeb, May 2026.

This photograph shows the Tirki Dima factory.

We’re looking into what happened to the Dima weaving technique after the last looms were abandoned during the Civil War.

The building is now being turned into a museum. The machines are held by the Beit Chabeb municipality. The people who worked there are now too old to continue working.

The building remains. The machines remain. The people who knew how to use them are no longer working.

What interests us is what happened to the knowledge that connected all three.

We spent a day in the old souk of Damascus looking at traditional saye fabric and the craft behind its production.

Traditionally woven from silk and cotton, saye is associated with Damascus and Aleppo. Today, it is also made using viscose and cotton.

Saye is part of a wider regional textile tradition that includes Damascene brocades, damask fabrics and Ottoman moiré, each with its own materials, structures and surface effects.

Looking at these fabrics helps us understand the regional specialities that developed around textile production, and how materials and techniques have changed over time.

Cotton, Fleur du Liban.

This is Gossypium herbaceum, commonly known as Levant cotton, photographed while researching natural fibres native to the region.

We were surprised to discover how deeply cotton cultivation was rooted in Lebanon. The Beit Chabeb Dima factories reportedly grew their own cotton. Samples examined by the Textile Museum in Lyon also indicate that the clothes of the 700-year-old Maronite mummies of Hadath El Jebbeh were made from cotton grown in the Qadisha Valley.

From the plant, the process continues through the extraction and spinning of fibres into thread, before reaching the loom.

This photograph comes from the Arida family archive.

It shows Georges, Sleiman and Joseph Arida at the family factory in Tripoli, where the family was involved in spinning and weaving.

The Arida brothers entered the textile industry in 1928, among the early families to establish textile production in Tripoli.

Can you recognize Rashid Karami and Camille Chamoun in the photographs?

During the Second World War, the Arida brothers produced uniforms, tents and other supplies for the British Army.

This is one of the family archives we’ve been looking at to understand the people, factories and networks behind Lebanon’s textile industry.

From cotton flower bolls to thread, thread to cloth, cloth to pattern, pattern to garment.

Each stage changes the material.

The fibre is spun.
The thread is tensioned.
The cloth is woven.
The fabric is cut.
The pieces are joined.

We’ve been following this sequence through the Library of Congress archive of G. Eric and Edith Matson Photograph Collection of the Arab Women’s Union of Ramallah between 1934 and 1939, documenting the traditional tools, materials and decisions involved at each stage. by @thisisfragmenta

A few of the things on our table while researching textile history and techniques.

Weaving, cuts, colours, embroideries, crochet, symbols, tools and samples.

We’ve been looking at ancestral know-how and artisanal techniques, comparing how they were made in the past with how similar processes are approached today. The tools may have evolved, but many of the basic principles remain the same.

These materials, objects and techniques are helping us trace the knowledge behind dress, from the way a textile is made to how it is cut, assembled and finished.

Part of the research for Qamīs: Fragments of Dress.

Every table begins with those who gather around it.

A meeting of food and art.
Of different hands and perspectives.
Of conversations that can only happen once.

Take your place at the table. Few seats left.

Look closely at these seams and embroideries.

They reinforce areas of friction, tension, wear and potential tearing.

We found this example in old Palestinian dresses from the N. Majdalani collection.

The construction shows a careful consideration of movement, durability and repair. Areas most exposed to wear were reinforced and, in some cases, covered with embroidery, allowing the garment to be maintained and used over time.
