At Hill Living Magazine, we love hearing from the people who know our neighbourhoods best. So we asked @prickett_and_ellis to share their favourite things about Highgate. As a business that has been part of Highgate since 1880, they’re perfectly placed to tell us what makes this corner of North London so special.

THE HISTORY
First mentioned in historical records in 1318, Highgate is home to beautiful historic sites including Pond Square, @kenwood_house_ and Highgate Cemetery. In fact, it’s the only place in the world where you can visit George Michael, Lucian Freud and Claudia Jones all on the same day!

Prickett & Ellis is part of that history too, with roots in Highgate going back at least to the 1760s when John Prickett first started auctioneering and his family worked as carpenters. In the early 1800s Ann and son, Charles Prickett, carried out carpentry work at Kenwood House.

THE LOCAL CAFES
From @qwcafe, originally built in 1898, and the new @superette.london to high street favourites, there’s no shortage of great coffee. Black Americano or iced oat vanilla latte with an extra shot? You’re spoilt for choice.

THE LOCAL PUBS
Highgate has some of North London’s best pubs, including @theangeln6, @bullhighgate and award-winning @theredlionandsun, recently named the UK’s third-best gastropub. You can also catch a show at @thegatehousen6 or go ghost spotting at @theflaskhighgate.

THE PARKS
Waterlow Park, Highgate Wood and Hampstead Heath are all close by, making it easy to escape into the greenery.

THE COMMUNITY SPIRIT
From the summer’s Fair in the Square to the Christmas lights switch-on and Carols in the Square, Highgate has a wonderful community spirit. Prickett & Ellis’ local partner Chris Underhill has been involved with the Christmas lights for over 25 years and the Carols, alongside @highgatesociety, for 15 years.

And at Christmas, you may even spot Chris in a very special red suit! 🎅

This week was such a special reminder of how magical books can be. 📚✨
@worldbookdaysocial is always one of our favourite moments of the year — a day dedicated to celebrating reading, imagination, and the joy that stories bring to children.

Highgate felt especially wonderful today. @highgatebookshop's shelves are filled with an incredible variety of books, and it’s the perfect place for little readers to explore new stories, discover favourite characters, and fall in love with reading all over again.

If your child didn’t receive a World Book Day token at school, don’t worry. Just comment “📚” below and we’ll send the token to you via DM in PDF format, so you can still pop into the bookshop and pick up a book.

📅 Tokens are valid until 15 March, so there’s still time to choose something special.

❤️ Highgate, today you felt like a love letter we didn’t know we needed ❤️
We walked through the village with open eyes…
and Highgate answered back with hearts.

In café windows.
On little chalkboards.
Tucked into florists’ displays.
Painted on shop signs.
Hidden in corners you’d only notice if you were really looking.

And maybe that’s the point.

Valentine’s Day isn’t just roses and grand gestures.
It’s the quiet love.
The everyday love.
The “I saw this and thought of you” love.

It’s the barista who remembers your order.
The neighbour who smiles at your little one.
The bookseller who saves a copy for you.
The florist who adds one extra stem “just because.”

Highgate doesn’t shout about love.
It simply leaves it everywhere.

Today we found hearts all over our village, and somehow it felt like Highgate was saying:
You belong here.
You’re part of this.
You are loved.

❄️🤍 Highgate slowed down today — not because we had to, but because the world gently asked us to. Footsteps softened. Sounds hushed. Time paused just long enough for us to notice the magic we so often rush past.
This wasn’t the kind of snow that disappears before lunch. This was the kind that meant it. The kind that settles into tree branches, gathers on railings, turns familiar paths into something new. The kind that makes grown-ups feel 8 again and children believe, just a little more fiercely, in miracles.

There’s something about Christmas in Highgate that quietly wraps itself around your heart. The soft glow of fairy lights in daylight. Cafés buzzing with quiet joy. Shop windows feel like little stories — thoughtful gifts you won’t find anywhere else, limited-edition treats made just for this time of year, one-of-a-kind stocking fillers waiting to be chosen. Familiar faces behind the counters. Smiles exchanged. Time slowing, just a little.

This isn’t about rushing or buying more.
It’s about wandering.
Noticing.
Supporting the places that turn a neighbourhood into a community.

Sometimes it’s all about the food 🍽️❤️ We were lucky enough to spend some time at @bistrolaz recently, and everything that came to the table genuinely impressed us. Fresh, full of flavour, and clearly cooked with care — the kind of meal you’re still thinking about long after you leave.

What we tried: shakshuka, kofte, iskender, the hot platter, baklava, and homemade lemonade — and every single dish delivered.

If you’re in Highgate and looking for somewhere that truly delivers on taste, LAZ is well worth a visit! 🤩💯

A winter stroll, twinkling smiles, and the kind of magic that only nature + community can create ✨🌿 We spent the afternoon wandering through @omvedgardens for their Festive Market & Open Gardens Day, breathing in fresh air and soaking up the calm beauty of the gardens in their seasonal glow. Between the winding paths and cosy corners, we discovered the most beautiful handcrafted gifts and festive treats.

Days like this remind us to slow down, support local creativity, and enjoy this beautiful hidden gem in the heart of the Highgate Village ❤️
