A week from today, I will be starting my 545-mile journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

I want to share with you why this ride is really important to me.

Not everyone has access to healthcare or the ability to afford health insurance. Your donation directly benefits LGBTQ+ people in Los Angeles and San Francisco, so they can access healthcare regardless of who they love or where they were born.

The Los Angeles LGBT Center is also the nation’s largest community-based provider of LGBT-related legal services. Your donation ensures LGBTQ+ survivors of violence, undocumented immigrants, and transgender people have access to legal counsel.

These services can be life-changing. My life was transformed because my mother, who was undocumented, was in the right place at the right time and had access to an immigration attorney. She cleaned houses for a living, and on Thanksgiving Day, 1986, one of her employers sent an immigration lawyer to our house to help mom adjust her status. Your donations are ensuring other kids like me have every opportunity to thrive.

The money I raise will help fund this life saving work and much more.

As I get ready to ride I want to take a moment to say it has taken a village to help me get ready for this ride. Shout to my acupuncturist @sinsa_acu / massage therapist; my trainers @staybogey, @thepeacecentergym and chiropractor @drycmat for keeping this body moving. I would not be able to do this ride without my sister who takes care of mom and my dog while I go out on hours-long training rides.

This is Lupita Fantasma Rivas. Today marks my one year adoption anniversary with her. I had toyed with the idea of getting a dog but was definitely not ready to be a dog dad when she came into my life. I learned about her at 8AM and I was in the Bay Area 10-hours later to pick her up. The first few weeks with her, she’d only go outside if I physically picked her up and carried her out. We would sit on my stoop for hours so she could get used to the sounds of L.A. If i wanted her to walk, I’d have to carry her around the corner so she was forced to walk back home.

She has taken my time, patience and spending to new levels. I mean, I grew up without health insurance. She has health insurance. She eats mostly deer and bison with probiotics and prebiotics soaked in chicken broth. She also loves raw duck. And thinly sliced bananas that her grandmother delicately slices for her because she worries Lupita doesn’t chew her food enough.

Lupita rewards me by posing and letting me take pictures of her. She once woke me up from a nightmare too, I was really grateful for that. And she loves sliding in between my torso and my arm and curling up like a rolly polly. Happy adoption day Lupita.

This is my little sister at a year and a half on April 29, 1992. I was 9. My brother who was in high school wasn’t home yet. There were no cell phones back then. Maybe he had a beeper but we didn’t hear from him and everyone was worried until he walked in the door. I remember the sirens and waking up to cars covered in ash. Dad left to meet my uncles and protect their soccer shop from looters. I saw someone driving a grand piano on the hood of their car and I begged my mother to go get one for us. For days I proposed different methods of getting the piano home. God will understand, I argued. Everyone got a piano except for me. #LAriots #LAuprising #onthisday by @thisisjorge

This Honduran man traveled thousands of miles with his wife and two kids to get to the U.S. border. Now he is on day two of his hunger strike. This is Lady, 23. She says she left Honduras at a moment where she did not have time to think about the decision. She was forced to leave Honduras from one day to the next. She couldn’t process anything, she just had to flee. Her partner was killed and soon after “I was told that if I didn’t leave the country, they would kill me.” She’s been with the #caravan since the start. “We walked a lot, and have endured hunger, sun, cold, rain, and we slept on sidewalks.” She says the caravan was more difficult and humiliating for LGBTQ+ folks. “When we asked for a ‘ride’ in the street, the trucks full of migrants would pass by, and they would throw water on our faces and insult us.” She said there were also times when a driver would pick them up and throw them off their vehicles a few just blocks later. 📸 by me for RAICES #immigration #centralamericancaravan #migrantcaravan #honduras #lgbt #portraitphotography #portrait taken in Tijuana, Baja California by @thisisjorge

This is Kevin, 25, on the left. Erick, 23, is on the right. Erick is from Honduras and moved to Guatemala for Kevin. They found each other and fell in love on Facebook. “We’ve been together for two years and seven months, thanks to God,” Kevin told me. This is J and the shoes he’s been walking in for the past month. “Se me rompieron en Arriaga,” he told me in between coughs. He has a cold and slept right in front of the beach. He started in Honduras and walked, hitchhiked and jumped on buses so he could get to Tijuana. He remembers exactly when the sole of his shoe started coming undone. He also remembers when he couldn’t stand his shoes anymore and took the insoles out. Just something different under his feet was a relief. “I endured thirst and hunger, a little bit of everything so I could be in the United States,” he told me. I looked up Arriaga. This is Jose. I’ve been photographing him during hospital visits for the past year. He’s 24, the same age I was when I was diagnosed with brain cancer. I got my diagnosis just a few weeks after my last semester in college. Jose was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 15. The cancer has come back five different times. “The cancer doesn’t take me but I keep getting sick,” Jose told me yesterday. He’s had to take a leave of absence from school three times now. Cancer keeps getting in the way. Now he has brain cancer. This time he’s determined to finish chemo and finish school. Jose is undocumented so there are only a few resources available for him.
