The trees in Langmoor and Lister Gardens are illuminated purple this weekend to mark World Polio Day on Saturday, 24 October, and support the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis’s Purple for Polio campaign.

The Rotary International campaign raises awareness of polio and the ongoing global effort to eradicate the disease. Vaccination remains vital to protecting children worldwide and preventing the spread of this potentially devastating illness.

The colour purple has a special significance for the campaign. Each year, children receiving polio vaccinations have one finger marked with purple dye to show they have been vaccinated. This simple but powerful symbol has become closely associated with the worldwide Purple for Polio initiative.

When Rotary launched its global campaign to eradicate polio in 1985, the disease was reported in 125 countries, with more than 350,000 cases worldwide. Since then, sustained international vaccination efforts have reduced cases by more than 99.9%, with wild poliovirus transmission now confined to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Rotary continues to play a vital role in the fight against polio, raising US$50 million annually. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation contributes a further US$100 million, bringing the combined annual commitment to US$150 million.

Although enormous progress has been made, the fight is not over. Vaccination programmes must continue to prevent the disease from spreading and to protect the progress achieved. The ultimate goal is to eradicate polio completely, making it only the second human disease ever to be eradicated worldwide, following smallpox.

By illuminating the trees in Langmoor and Lister Gardens purple with the support of Lyme Regis Town Council, the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis hopes to raise awareness locally and remind the community that, with continued commitment and vaccination, a polio-free world is within reach.

Support the Lyme Regis Halloween Duck Race to Raise Vital Funds for Defibrillators

Hundreds of toy ducks will take to the River Lym on Halloween as the Halloween themed duck race raises money for Lyme Heartbeat, the volunteer-led organisation responsible for maintaining lifesaving defibrillators across the local area.

The race will take place at midday on Saturday, 31 October, starting on the River Lym near Windsor Terrace, with the finish line at Jordan Flats.

Ducks can be purchased online at lymeduckrace.co.uk or in person from Fine Art & Framing in Broad Street, Lyme Regis or from the race start point.

Children encouraged to wear fancy dress 👻
Children arriving at the starting point in Halloween fancy dress will receive a free spooky duck.

How to Enter the Duck Race

Each duck is individually numbered, with participants receiving their number when purchasing an entry.

There is no need to attend the event to take part, as winners will be notified. However, organisers are encouraging as many people as possible to come along and watch the colourful spectacle unfold on the river.

Cash Prizes Up for Grabs

There are four cash prizes to be won, including a reward for the last duck to cross the finish line.

The prizes are:

First place: £100
Second place: £50
Third place: £20
Last duck home: £10

The event is kindly sponsored by Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium.

Supporting Lifesaving Equipment

The race aims to raise vital funds for Lyme Heartbeat, a small team of volunteers responsible for installing and maintaining 17 defibrillators across Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Uplyme.

These devices can make a crucial difference in an emergency. According to South Western Ambulance Service, survival chances following a cardiac arrest can decrease by around 10% for every minute without CPR and defibrillation.

Money raised will help cover essential maintenance costs and ensure the equipment remains available when it is needed most.

To enter the race, visit lymeduckrace.co.uk or purchase a duck from Fine Art & Framing in Broad Street, Lyme Regis.

To find your nearest defibrillator, visit the Lyme Heartbeat website. by @thisislymeregis

Local Fisherman Reels in Surprise Shark Catch! - A local fisherman was in for a surprise today when he reeled in a porbeagle shark 11 miles off the coast of Lyme Regis.

Virgil Turner was out fishing for bass aboard his boat, Quo Vadis, when he hooked what he initially thought was a tuna. However, after a gruelling 45-minute battle, he was astonished to discover he had caught a shark!

The porbeagle is a powerful, cold-water predator closely related to the great white shark, but they are not considered a threat to humans.

The remarkable catch had a happy ending with the shark safely released back into the sea and swimming away.

The Cannington Viaduct from above. Over the weekend, around 800 people had the rare opportunity to walk across the magnificent Cannington Viaduct, guided by volunteers from For the Love of a Railway, a group set up to celebrate and preserve the story of the famous old Axminster to Lyme Regis railway line.

The viaduct is the last surviving major structure of the railway, which closed in 1965. Being able to walk across it offered a unique chance to experience a remarkable piece of local railway history from a completely different perspective. by @thisislymeregis
