18 years 📻

18 years ago today, I walked into a radio studio above Poundland in Yeovil, opened the microphone for the very first time, and hoped someone, somewhere, was listening.

Somehow, 18 years later, we’re still here.

Together we’ve shared the highs and the lows. Moments of uncertainty and days we’ll never forget. From broadcasting the words, “Stay at home. Protect the NHS. Save lives.” to sharing the news that marriage equality became law, radio has been there, keeping us connected.

Radio has taken me further than I ever imagined. From that studio in Yeovil, to broadcasting from a float through the streets of New York for WorldPride. From One Golden Square in London, to the city I’m now proud to call home, Manchester. It’s introduced me to heroes, unforgettable conversations and opportunities I never thought possible.

That journey began at Ivel FM, broadcasting across Somerset. From there it took me to Midwest Radio, GaydarRadio in London, national broadcasting with Gaydio, before bringing me to where I am today - broadcasting across the UK on Hits Radio, Hits Radio Pride and Heat Radio. Looking back, it’s a journey that 16 year old me could never have imagined.

I’ll always be grateful to have been behind the microphone during some of those moments, from broadcasting the morning after the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, to being on the ground in Manchester on the first anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack. They reminded me that radio is about far more than music. It’s about bringing people together and making sure no one feels alone.

That’s the magic of radio. One day you’re helping people make sense of the biggest stories, the next you’re debating what colour the dress really was or wondering how on earth the country ran out of KFC.

Thank you to every station that’s believed in me, every colleague I’ve worked alongside, and most importantly, everyone who’s ever tuned in.

I’ll never forget the first song I ever played on the radio. It was Oleta Adams – Get Here. Eighteen years later, it still feels like the perfect soundtrack to this post.

Here’s to the next 18 years. Hopefully, somewhere, you’ll be listening. ❤️🎙️
