Look, I’m a junkie for experiences that knock you on your ass and leave you in awe of humanity.

Forget your sanitized resort bullshit. I’m talking about the real deal, the kind of adventure that sticks to your ribs - the beautiful, messy, chaotic heart of a place. So, Dominican Independence Day rolls around, I’m in Las Terrenas, and I’m thinking, “This is it!” Ditch the all-inclusive, hop on a moto-taxi, and dive headfirst into the Dominican Republic’s Carnival. And let me tell you, that parade? Pure, unadulterated mayhem. It’s the kind of experience that reinforces why I travel in the first place – to see the world as it is, not as some brochure tells you it should be.

Have a look… I’ll be chewing on that story for years.

Every city has its rituals. Toronto has this one.

At the end of every summer, we gather beside the lake to eat things on sticks, throw money at games we have almost no chance of winning, and proudly carry home stuffed animals no reasonable adult would ever purchase.

There’s wrestling. Bingo. Balloons. Questionable food decisions.

Kids negotiate the midway like seasoned gamblers. Adults become deeply invested in winning a plush Pokémon. Somewhere, someone is carrying a six-foot stuffed animal onto the GO Train.

It’s loud. Expensive. Slightly absurd.

And completely wonderful.

Because the CNE has never really been about the rides or the prizes.

It’s our strange little way of admitting summer is almost over.

So we eat the corn dog.
We play one more game.
We stay until the lights come on.

September can wait outside the gates.

The last few nights of summer should feel a little unhinged.

Cotton candy bigger than your head.
Losing five bucks on a game you were definitely going to win.
Snow cones, popcorn, screaming rides, questionable odds and the absolute chaos of the midway after dark.

The CNE, doing what it does best:
making Toronto feel like summer isn’t quite over yet.

I’ve learned to trust the wrong turn.

Especially with a camera in hand.

Turn down the alley. Follow the music. Stop for the animals. Watch the old couple disappear around the corner. Order whatever smells good.

The world keeps rewarding that kind of curiosity.

Not with some grand discovery, but with little moments I never could’ve planned.

Maybe that’s the fun of wandering somewhere new.

You don’t always need to know what you’re looking for.

You just need to be open to what you’ll find.
