Posted @withregram • @ongov Starting July 28, immunocompromised youth aged 12-17 will become eligible to schedule their second booster (fifth dose) of the COVID-19 vaccine if at least six months have passed since their first booster (fourth dose).

Health Canada has completed a thorough and independent scientific review of the evidence and has found the Moderna vaccine safe and effective at preventing #COVID19 in children 6 months through 5 years of age (1).

Rollout is expected soon, but the details will depend on your province/territory. So check with local providers for how to book appointments!

EFFECTIVENESS:
This vaccine is about 50% effective at stopping kids 6 to 23 months old getting COVID, and is a bit less effective - about 37% - for kids 2-5 years old (2). This might seem low, but new variants are now better at evading our immune response and our priority now is to prevent severe disease and hospitalizations (3,4,5). The immune response shown in children was similar to that of adults that received higher doses of the vaccine, suggesting that it will protect our kids well against severe disease (2).

SAFETY:
In authorizing the Moderna vaccine, Health Canada is saying that the vaccine is safe to use (6). The COVID-19 vaccine will be teaching your little one's immune system to fight SARS-CoV-2, and it's normal to have some mild side effects. The most frequently reported side effects found during the trial were: irritability/crying, pain, sleepiness, and loss of appetite. But don’t worry, these should go away within a few days (2,7).

Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada will continue to closely monitor the safety of this vaccine and will take action if any safety concerns are identified.

NACI is expected to give recommendations for kids #Under5 later today. You can count on us to update you when we have more information - stay tuned!

Details about the SAFETY profiles for each vaccine:

👉Pfizer vaccine:
▪️Pfizer enrolled 4,500 children in its clinical trials. For those ages 5 & under, 1,678 children received two doses three weeks apart & then a third dose at least two months after the second dose.
▪️The vaccine was well tolerated & there were no new safety issues signaled
▪️the majority of side effects were mild or moderate

👉Moderna vaccine:
▪️approximately 11,700 children enrolled ages 6 months to 12 years, including 6,700 under 6 years old. All children received two doses of the vaccine, 28 days apart
▪️According to data from the company, the majority of side effects (for the group under 6 years of age) were mild or moderate & mostly reported after the 2nd dose
▪️No new safety concerns were identified.

✅With both vaccines, there were NO cases of myocarditis or pericarditis

Details about the EFFICACY of each vaccine:

👉Pfizer vaccine:
▪️Following a 3rd dose, children 5 and under elicited a strong immune response, and efficacy was 80.3% in preventing symptomatic infection. These preliminary findings were based on 10 symptomatic cases identified 7 days after the 3rd dose
▪️The immune response among children under 5 (measured one month after the third dose) compared favorably to that of two doses among 16- to 25-year-olds. It’s important to note that parts of the studies took place BEFORE the Omicron variant was predominant

👉Moderna:
▪️Interim results show that the vaccine was 51% effective against symptomatic infection among children ages 6 months to 2 years, and 37% effective among those 2 to 5 years
▪️In both age groups, 2 doses compared favorably to the immune response adults ages 18 to 25 had after 2 doses. The studies were conducted DURING the Omicron wave

Bottom Line❗️

Both are great options producing high levels of neutralizing antibodies! 💉💉

🔸Moderna - ⬆️ efficacy sooner, slightly more side effects, 6 weeks = “fully” vaccinated, ? 3rd dose needed
🔸Pfizer - ⬇️ side effects, ⬆️ safety info in kids 5-17, 3rd dose may broaden Pfizer's immunity, 13 weeks =“fully” vaccinated by @thisisourshotca

@unbiasedscipod Today (6/15/22), the FDA's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, (VRBPAC), met to review the data on Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for kids under 5 years of age.

VRBPAC voted unanimously to recommend expansion of the EUA for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to include children 6 months - 6 years, and expansion of the EUA for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to include children 6 months - 5 years. Next, CDC will need to sign off before we see shots in arms.

VRBPAC reviewed data on safety, tolerability, & efficacy. The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for kids under 6 is a two-dose regimen, four weeks apart. Each dose contains 25 micrograms of active ingredient. Over 6,600 children younger than 6 were enrolled in the clinical trial: 3,100 children 2 to 5 and 1,911 children aged 6 to 23 months old. At least half were followed for at least two months after dose two. Depending on the definition of COVID case used, vaccine efficacy against symptomatic illness ranged from 43.7% to 53.5%. Reactogenicity was similar to adults. Some kids felt sick and feverish for a few days, particularly after dose 2.

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for kids under 5 is a three-dose regimen: dose 2 is given 3 weeks after the first, and dose 3 is given 8 weeks after the second. Each dose contains 3 micrograms of active ingredient. Pfizer reported vaccine efficacy after two doses of 28.3% against symptomatic illness. After dose 3, they report that efficacy jumps to over 80%, but that is based on a small sample (7 children). About 1,700 children under 5 were enrolled in the clinical trial. Very few side effects were reported; adverse events were similar between vaccine and placebo groups.

So, what does this mean? Should I get my child Moderna or Pfizer? The TL;DR is that current data suggest higher efficacy of the Moderna vaccine, but this comes with more side effects (though temporary) compared to the Pfizer vaccine. Some preliminary data suggest that the third Pfizer dose strongly augments protection. For now, this is good news for parents who have been anxiously awaiting a vaccine for our youngest children by @thisisourshotca

The BC Chapter is a grassroots, non-political volunteer organization created by physicians and community leaders from diverse backgrounds from across the country to address the disproportionate levels of COVID-19 cases in the South Asian community. By improving accessibility to credible information and addressing concerns specific to the South Asian community, the SACTF helped boost vaccine uptake and reduce transmission of COVID-19.

Posted @withregram • @scienceupfirst The arguments about the benefits of natural immunity against COVID-19 all miss a central point:

To gain natural immunity, one must first survive the infection.

Millions of people around the world have not.

That’s a tragedy, and a failure of our societies to protect the most vulnerable.

Yes, COVID-19 is more likely to be serious for older people and for people with comorbidities.

But youth IS NOT a guarantee of safety. Neither is “no pre-existing conditions” or immune status.

Immunity (no matter how it’s acquired) will lessen the chances of COVID-19 becoming severe. But no one can know for certain the outcome of their infection.

Letting a deadly pathogen rip through the entire population is a dangerous proposition.
