Ahman Green ( @ahmangreen30 ) told me, in the latest episode of This is Parkinson’s, that men need to be more open about their health, mental health, and their life in general. He was inspired to be more open after hearing one of his idols talk about being more open and honest. Watch the full interview on the This is Parkinson’s YouTube channel.

“Every day I wake up, I appreciate that day and that I get to be with my family.” 🌿✨

On this episode of This Is Parkinson’s, Lisa Volenec sits down with artist, advocate, and light-filled human Hadley Ferguson ( @Summit_for_parkinsons ).

After being diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s and later Multiple System Atrophy (MSA)—a rare, atypical form of Parkinsonism—Hadley transformed her journey into art, action, and community.
From her international work The Tree of Resilience (now residing at the @michaeljfoxorg) to creating Montana’s first dedicated Parkinson’s resource center (Summit for Parkinson’s), Hadley’s story is a masterclass in adapting, staying present, and finding joy.

Twelve years.
Today marks 12 years since my Parkinson’s diagnosis. Looking back, I am filled with overwhelming gratitude.

Navigating this journey would be impossible without the incredible, resilient community that surrounds me. To my friends, family, and everyone who has walked alongside me—thank you for your unwavering support, love, and understanding.
I also want to express my deepest appreciation to The Michael J. Fox Foundation @michaeljfoxorg for their relentless drive toward a cure and for being an enduring source of hope for millions.

Building This Is Parkinson’s has been one of the most fulfilling chapters of this journey, allowing us to connect, advocate, and lift each other up. Thank you to everyone who lends their voice, shares their story, and helps us build a stronger community every single day.

Here’s to strength, community, and moving forward together. 💙

Where do we find hope when navigating life with Parkinson’s?

On this episode of This Is Parkinson’s, Lisa Volenec is thrilled to welcome Dr. Erin Cameron-Smith, a Movement Disorder Specialist from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. ( @unmcmovementdis )

Dr. Cameron-Smith talks about the incredible power of community, support networks, and the future of research.

* The Power of Community: Strong local networks—like Heartland Neurological in Waterloo and support groups in Lincoln and Omaha—provide built-in systems where people can lean on one another and share a shoulder when it’s needed most.

* A Spectrum, Not Just a Disease: Parkinson’s often behaves more like a syndrome or a continuum rather than a single uniform disease, with unique genetic types and dominant symptoms varying by individual.

* Promising Research: Emerging advancements like gene-modifying therapies and evolving stem cell techniques are driving clinical trials forward and sparking optimism for the future of treatment.

What gives you the most hope on your journey? Let us know in the comments below! 👇

🎙️ Whether you are a patient, a care partner, or just want to understand the fastest-growing neurodegenerative disease, this episode is packed with essential guidance and real hope for the future.

Honored, inspired, and deeply grateful. ✨

This is Parkinson’s Founder Lisa Volenec recently had the privilege of moderating the Fireside Chat: Stories and Solutions—How Lived Experience Shapes Research at the 2026 NINDS Nonprofit Forum, hosted by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in partnership with the American Brain Coalition ( @americanbrainco ).

Joined by incredible panelists Erin “Stroke Mama” Adelekun (@stroke.mama) and Dr. Maria Kefalas (@curemld), the conversation centered on the vital role personal experience plays in driving research forward.

The forum brought together an extraordinary room of advocates with lived experience, nonprofit leaders, researchers, scientists, clinicians, industry partners, and federal agencies—all united by a single mission: to strengthen collaboration and advance neuroscience research.

Seeing the meaningful progress being made firsthand was nothing short of impressive. True breakthroughs happen when lived experience leads the way. 🧠💡
