The Trump administration’s anti-immigrant agenda could lead to roughly 15,000 people in Nevada losing legal protections and cost the state’s economy an estimated $441 million by the end of this year, according to a recent Fwd analysis.

The report released by the immigrant advocacy organization earlier this month found that about 7,000 people in Nevada have government-authorized work permits.

Janelle Sorenson loves the clear night skies in Boulder City, less than an hour’s drive from the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip. It’s a small, quiet town, and she thinks an artificial intelligence data center would ruin the community and scar the desert landscape.

So over the summer, she joined with other residents to successfully oppose plans for one of the giant computing warehouses that have popped up around the country.

Among the stack of lawsuits Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford has filed in his two terms is one of particular significance to the state and its bread-and-butter gambling industry – the effort to keep prediction markets out of states with regulated sports betting.

But on Wednesday, Ford briefly eschewed his adversarial posture and in a fundraising pitch, touted prediction platform Kalshi’s take on his chances against Gov. Joe Lombardo, whom he hopes to defeat in November.

The race for Reno City Council's Ward 4 seat is drawing scrutiny over challenger Eddie Gomez's property records and campaign claims about incumbent Megan Ebert's attendance.

A This Is Reno investigation found Gomez has more than $7,500 in outstanding city liens tied to unpaid sewer fees, code enforcement penalties and unpermitted construction at a rental property he owns.

Records also raise questions about Gomez's residency claims, including mortgages on properties outside Ward 4 that required owner occupancy.

Meanwhile, Gomez's campaign has criticized Ebert for allegedly missing council meetings. But This Is Reno's review of 112 meetings, workshops and special meetings found Ebert missed just one full meeting since taking office in November 2022.

Ebert says health conditions sometimes require her to participate remotely, which she describes as a disability accommodation.

Gomez did not respond to This Is Reno.

This Is Reno reported in July that Republican David Flippo, a candidate for Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District, had missed the deadline to file his federally required financial disclosure statement.

Just over two weeks ago, The Nevada Independent reported obtaining a draft of Flippo’s disclosure statement. But as Nevadans prepare to cast their ballots in early voting, there are no records showing Flippo has formally filed the disclosure with the U.S. House of Representatives.

Washoe County Registrar of Voters Andrew McDonald on Tuesday encouraged voters to cast their ballots early or return mail ballots well ahead of the Nov. 3 general election to avoid potential postal delays and help speed up election results.

McDonald provided an election update to the Washoe Board of County Commissioners and said his office is preparing for a significant increase in voter turnout and mail ballots compared with the June primary election.

The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to buy an 85,000-square-foot office building and an adjacent vacant lot for $46.5 million, a move district officials said will end nearly 20 years of searching for a home for central office staff now scattered across six buildings.

THIS IS RENO INVESTIGATES: Two policing experts reached opposite conclusions about Reno Police Officer Richard Jager’s September 2023 arrest of Jason Killinger at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino. The experts disagreed on a central question of the case: What should a reasonable officer do when a private casino’s facial-recognition system claims a 100% match and the man in front of him holds a valid driver’s license in another name? Part 4 of 4.

Reno police are seeking City Council approval for a $21.8 million, eight-year contract with Axon that would expand the department's surveillance technology, drones and artificial intelligence tools.

The proposed agreement includes more than 200 license plate readers, drones that can respond to emergency calls and AI software that drafts police reports using body camera audio.

The proposal comes after Reno announced plans to cancel its contract with Flock Safety, whose license plate reader network has faced public opposition.

But the new Axon agreement raises additional questions about privacy and data ownership. While city staff says Reno would retain ownership of its data, contract provisions give Axon broader rights to certain information collected through its products, including drone detection systems.

The agreement also includes provisions allowing Axon to use certain de-identified data for product development and AI training.

The Reno City Council is scheduled to consider the agreement Wednesday, Oct. 21.
