Subconscious drawing, often referred to as automatic drawing, is a technique where the artist allows their hand to move freely across the paper without consciously controlling the movements. The goal is to bypass the conscious mind and access the subconscious, allowing unplanned, spontaneous images to emerge. This method is often used in art therapy, surrealism, and other creative practices to explore inner thoughts, emotions, and ideas that may not be readily accessible through deliberate effort. It can result in abstract, symbolic, or unexpectedly meaningful artwork.

Several famous artists have employed subconscious or automatic drawing techniques. Notable examples include:

*Salvador Dalí**: While not strictly an automatic drawer, Dalí used similar techniques in his “paranoiac-critical method” to access his subconscious and create his surreal paintings. Ant eater ftw 🙌

**Jean Arp**: An artist associated with both Dadaism and Surrealism, Arp used automatic drawing to produce abstract forms that he later transformed into sculptures and other artworks. Sculpture sculptures. I think subconscious pottery might be a thing too.

*Max Ernst**: A German painter and sculptor, Ernst used a variety of automatic techniques, including frottage (rubbing) and decalcomania (pressing paint between surfaces) to create unexpected textures and images. Surreal GOAT

When Nothing wrong with spontaneous drawings and surprising results of subconscious drawing as a way to tap into deeper layers of creativity.

Technical skill can certainly enhance an artist’s ability to convey their ideas, it is not the sole determinant of artistic value. The emotional resonance, originality, and the message behind the artwork is more important. Does it make you feel something.

Art should be a personal journey, and it’s perfectly valid to create in a way that feels authentic to you, even if it doesn’t or it does align with traditional techniques or expectations.

Admiring the skills of others while acknowledging your own unique path is a healthy balance. Everyone’s artistic journey is different, and there’s no single right way to be an artist. Drop it in the comments by @thisisricardo
