Thanksgiving for us is next weekend (cause coparenting) but this was a harvest time! Dug, picked and pulled it all out, and spent a day and a half peeling, chopping, baking and freezing for the winter. Just waiting on our tomatoes to decide it’s time. by @thisissamanthab

Today one of my best friends’ obituaries was shared, which represents an ending, an announcement, a proclamation. Here Was Her Life. She died. It was written stunningly and although Tina will forever be impossible to capture in words, her obituary did a perfect job of it. A link is in my profile.

My story with Tina is one I was lucky to live. It was - is - so deeply personal that it’s mostly just a story between a few people still on this earth. She was a fierce, protective, whimsical, juicy person. Stories will follow about her adventures for many generations. She was all-in for late nights in pyjamas on the couch with wine and popcorn. She was cuddling my toddlers (and most recently, ten-year-old) when they simply wouldn’t sleep, letting them talk her ear off at 3 am. She was the one to challenge, to encourage, to step in, when the roads were tricky. She was free-flowing emotions, she was tears in the car while in the McDonald’s lineup, she was Watch Me Swim to the Other Side of the Lake, she was a box of chocolate chip cookies on the counter and a quick text about Work Stuff (theatre? Ice cream? Teaching? Yes, she mastered three careers), and a dreamer of dreams and a creator. Tina told me to be more gentle with my children when I was at the end of my line when I had three kids under four. She was right, and I became so. When I shared something tragic with her, she was the first one to ask if I really was “over it”. She was bold and unafraid to do the work that it takes to cultivate a depth of friendship that only comes a couple of times in a life.

There isn’t a space for me to claim Tina as my sister, and I won’t. She was family because we chose to be family but I think, most importantly: she was my friend.

I’ll never relive the moments we had again but I will hold our last week, our vacations, our dreams, together in my heart for eternity. I love you T. Thank you for a beautiful life. by @thisissamanthab

Last night, I left my “things to do” and went and just laid on blankets with my girls (extended version, plus Sadie) watching the meteor shower. Fireballs fell from the sky. Shooting stars streaked. The kids I love more than anything squealed excitement about nature and the one in my belly even let me feel them bubbling around. In a world that right now feels so deeply terrible and unfair, it was a nice reminder that those meteors didn’t come to us. Instead, we are on a roundish rock rotating and revolving toward them. Once a year, we speed and collide into an area where fiery masses tumble around space, and from our patch of grass and water, if the sky is clear, if the clouds have fallen away, we might get to witness it all. All painful, beautiful, all of it. by @thisissamanthab

I have this tree, in my front yard. It is just between the fire pit and the trampoline and it sees, arguably, from a perspective of the most joy than any other tree from the thousands that my property could see. It has a funny tendency, though, to turn red a little early. Like… July-early. The leaves begin to curl a bit and brighten and slowly tumble to the earth, and the cool thing about the tree becoming autumn in July is that I get to enjoy the hell out of how beautiful it’s leaves are. Look how vibrant. Look how stunning. Look how we can trace the veins of them with our fingers and hold them up to the sun. Unlike the other thousands of trees that will in their turn become burnt orange and brown and red eventually, I don’t rake up the leaves of this one. Instead they settle and mingle against the bright green grass between the trampoline and the fire pit. I don’t know why my tree has a tendency to find autumn in the summer. There are other trees in the same place, with the same conditions, in the same yard and they wait until September, October, November. But this little guy? He lets us celebrate vibrancy and colour in July.

I had a week of holding leaves to the sun, of meticulously memorizing moments, of letting my body and mind sponge and absorb and hold and hold and hold and release. Thank you to my friends who are my family for all of the life. I love you more than you’ll ever know. by @thisissamanthab
