THAT imagines the creation of the universe. Video equipment comes to life by the cranking of tripod knobs, zooming in and out, maneuvering visual feedback loops, dissolving images together and apart, creating an abstract video puppetry before our eyes. No pre-recorded video, no tricks. THIS is about people - their romantic sense of longing, loss, alienation and near miss... a cowboy sleeps under the stars, a family puts their child to sleep for the night, a crooner serenades his lover, a jazz pianist fantasizes while he plays. Hand shadow vignettes, inspired by Henry Moore sculptures, morph from one scene to another. “That” is entirely video feedback. Cranking of tripod nobs and zooming in and out, no computer effects. The camera is pointed at its image and feeds back. Like two mirrors pointed at each other. The camera focuses on the light and creates incredibly captivating, infinitely different visuals that are difficult to balance and maintain. by @thisthatperformance

What is THIS? What is THAT? ---- two performances which together make a complete evening of visual puppet theatre. THAT uses light and video technology as abstract puppetry whereas THIS investigates hand shadows. THAT paints with light and imagines the creation of the universe -- whereas THIS follows a puppeteer and his figures as they explore loss, love and alienation. Steven Wendt is the lead puppeteer and featured performer of THIS and THAT directed by and created with Phil Soltanoff. by @thisthatperformance
