A mile off Hawaii’s Big Island. Pitch black.

My daughter Romy and I dropped into the water to watch manta rays feed at night. These aren’t small animals. One rises out of the dark — wings spread, mouth open — like something surfacing from another world.

For me, a dream.

For Romy, closer to a nightmare.

That’s usually where creativity finds me. In water. Getting in — literally, and otherwise — is never comfortable. It isn’t supposed to be. taken in Hawaii (island) by @thoeffgen

Today is the day. The beautiful game opens worldwide.
As a European living in America, I love watching World Cup fever take over this country. Football is in my blood — and now it’s everywhere here too.
What makes this game so beautiful is its simplicity. You don’t need expensive gear or a court. Just a ball, some friends, and a piece of ground.
In 2009 I flew to Soweto, Johannesburg to photograph Soccer City Stadium — one year before South Africa hosted the World Cup. Soweto is where Nelson Mandela lived for 16 years. The heartland of the anti-apartheid struggle. A symbol of unity, resilience, and the enduring beauty of humanity.
I hired a helicopter and flew overhead. Football was everywhere below me. On every patch of open ground.
There is so much privilege and freedom in play. It exists outside of politics.
Today the opening whistle blows and South Africa takes the field at the Estadio Azteca. Let this game be a reminder of what unites us.
This large format print of Soweto is close to my heart. It’s a limited edition of three — one lives at FC Barcelona, and the other in North London at the Arsenal Football Club. The last artist print is available, and I hope it finds someone who feels the symbolism as deeply as I do.

Opening my archive.

Twenty-five years ago I travelled to Nigeria with a camera and a feeling I couldn’t quite name. These prints are what came back with me — the passion for football, the passion for photography, both discovered through the same lens.

As the world gathers for the 2026 World Cup, I’m going back through every image from that first trip. The one that became my 2009 book, African Arenas.

Prints available now — link in bio.
