The exhibition Noah’s Ark presents paintings by the artist from recent years. Among other things, a symbolic or allegorical dimension appears to be of significance in the works on display, which come in a variety of formats. It is immediately striking that the visual worlds depicted are not, on the face of it, inhabited by humans. Homo sapiens is absent as a figure; he has evidently left the spheres surrounding him, or has transformed himself into entities such as a house, a tree, a cloud and a planet – metaphors for the possibility of a “well-ordered“ existence, for putting down roots and inner growth, for a transcendence into the eternally changing.
This is presumably about the prospect of an anthropology under changed circumstances, for the drive towards levelling and the wars of devastation seem to have been defeated. A pictorial space—colouristically restrained, darkened, yet also brightened—opens up.
In doing so, the artist also explores the question of how the boundaries between the representable and so-called abstraction might currently be drawn, without seamlessly continuing pictorial conventions already developed historically. In Thomas Grötz’s works, “pure“ forms—which were asserted in the history of painting in the early 20th century—are at times implanted into the twilight of natural scenes. Art, understood in immanent terms, is not separate from a real sphere of life ranging from the vegetal to the architectural.

In jedem Kunstwerk steckt eine Art der Welterkennung - das liegt in der Natur der Sache. Doch es gibt Kunstschaffende, die dieses Thema zu ihrem Hauptthema machen.
Bei Thomas Grötz geht es dabei nicht um das Abbilden unserer alltäglichen Welt. Er schaut nicht auf die Details, sondern auf das große Ganze. So sehen wir Bilder, die von natürlichen Elementen erzählen. Der Himmel scheint auf diesen Werken förmlich über dem Betrachter einzustürzen, während wir gleichzeitig zarte, hauchdünn gemalte Landschaften wahrnehmen.
Ist er also ein Landschaftsmaler? Vielleicht auch ein bisschen. Doch sein Blick richtet sich vielmehr in den Himmel, wenn nicht sogar ins Universum. Seine Kunst zeigt eine Welterkennung, die das große Ganze greifbarer machen will: Unmöglich, aber Thomas Grötz versucht es. ——
