Film distribution is just marketing plus delivery, and other companies currently control both of them.

Marketing now means social media… But just posting about the film isn’t enough. You have to learn (or spend money to hire) the skills of hooks, pattern interrupts, curiosity gaps, packaging, and retention to win this game.

Delivery of your movie means converting as much of the attention you’ve generated into actual sales by processing payment and delivering the film to their TV. But that currently means going through PNA, sales agents, distributors, theater bookers, and aggregators. It means waiting for their permission and giving them a huge cut.

Hollywood spends tens of millions of dollars guessing what audiences want based on words on a page.

The problem is that you cannot predict story resonance, execution, or audience reaction from a script alone.

So we're trying something different in NYC this year with a $100,000 annual pool for indie films:
- Seed ~10 small proof-of-concept films
- Help produce and package the projects
- Screen the cuts in our NYC microcinema with a live audience, investors, and producers
- Double down on the breakout stories for an expanded feature or series

Film school gives you structure and puts you in a room with like-minded peers who become lifelong collaborators.

The problem is the education model. You pay $200k+ to learn outdated formulas and walk away having directed maybe one or two actual short films across four years.

Directing is a trade built on volume and reps with a crew, not lecture halls.

We’re building The Vandalist Foundry in New York to give filmmakers the collaborators, the cinema, the gear, and the reps, without the financial barrier.

The apprenticeship model that trained Spielberg and Scorsese is gone. The festival ladder that launched Nolan and Aronofsky is broken.

Filmmakers spend years making movies for festival programmers, while studios only look for de-risked IP. Nobody is developing original talent to make films audiences actually want to see.
