We are deeply saddened to share that our artistic leader, Pascal Touzeau, passed away on Monday, 27 April.

Born in Bordeaux, France, Pascal Touzeau trained at the Conservatoire before beginning his career as a professional dancer. He performed with companies including the Opéra national de Bordeaux, Ballet Bonn, and Ballet Frankfurt under the direction of William Forsythe.

As a director, he led Ballet Carmen Roche in Madrid and later served as artistic director of Ballett Mainz, building an international career as a choreographer. In 2011, he was made Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in recognition of his contribution to the arts.

Ultimately, as founder and artistic director of Düsseldorf Ballettheater, he brought his philosophy and ideals of dance together with an interdisciplinary approach.

As a creator, he influenced companies and dancers with clarity, rigor, and a deeply human approach to movement. He believed that everyone can dance, that meaning lives in what happens between the steps, while his artistic voice remained precise and searching.

Pascal often spoke about “finding the quiet in chaos.” This idea lived not only in his work, but in the environments he cultivated: spaces of intensity, listening, and transformation.

He had begun developing a new production of Spartacus for the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida, scheduled to premiere this July.

He will be remembered for his intensity, his musicality, and his unwavering commitment to the art of dance and to the people within it.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues. 27 April by @thomas_huy_
