About the Instructor
Tom attended the American Academy of Art (Chicago) to study both commercial and fine art. It was at the Academy where he was highly influenced and inspired by Irving Shapiro, Robert Krajecki and William Parks among other incredibly gifted fine art instructors. Shortly after completing the program, Tom was hired at Eaton & Iwen, a premier illustration studio located on Michigan Avenue and East Adams Street where he created hand illustrated storyboards for animated features, films and commercials as well as a variety of work for print ad campaigns. He worked alongside of art directors and marketing specialists providing high quality marker renderings and illustrations for a number of clients including Suave, Kraft Foods, Oldsmobile, Keebler, McDonalds, Quaker Oats and Kellogg’s. Tom later left his career as an illustrator to study theology - eventually receiving a Master’s degree in Christian Ministry.

He has since served in a variety of ministry leadership roles in, New York, Chicago and Simi Valley, California and currently in Fort Wayne. Tom has presented live painting demonstrations onstage at major conferences and public events and has also offered classroom and workshop art instruction for adults, teens and elementary students. He continues to exhibit his work and has won several awards in juried competitions.

Artist Spotlight: @thomasdesomer

How did you get started and develop your career?
Thomas De Somer: My journey began at the American Academy of Art where I was influenced by master watercolorist, Irving Shapiro as well as other gifted fine art instructors. After completing the program, I worked for two premier illustration studios in Chicago, creating marker rendered storyboards and digital art for several ad agencies.

George Inness said, “The true use of art, is first, to cultivate the artist’s own spiritual nature” and this has been true for me. After establishing myself as an illustrator, I left my career and set my art ambitions aside for two decades. I studied theology and eventually received a master’s degree in Christian ministries, serving in leadership roles in New York, Chicago, Southern California, and in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It wasn’t until 2014, however, when I attended a workshop with Tony Couch that I received the encouragement that set me on course toward establishing myself as a fine artist.

I am committed to the continued development of my skill, style, and creative impact. My art journey has taken a new (and exciting) turn, and the goals set for myself as a young artist were much different than they are today.
