Navigating the crowds, the sun, and my “best angle” while everyone tried to get their perfect photo, things got tight real quick at the base of Christ the Redeemer.

Spent two days chasing Lina Bo Bardi across São Paulo. Born in Rome in 1914, she moved to Brazil with her husband, Pietro Bardi, in 1946 and never left. São Paulo became home to three of her defining works.

Casa de Vidro (1951). Her first built project in Brazil, suspended above a lush rainforest and designed as both a home and a gathering place for artists, architects, and thinkers. Lina and Pietro are buried on the grounds, making the house both a masterpiece of modernism and a deeply personal home.

MASP (1968). Two red concrete beams suspend the museum 74 meters above Avenida Paulista. Inside, Lina’s crystal easels let visitors walk around each painting and discover the artist, title, and other information on the reverse.

SESC Pompéia (1982). Rather than demolish an abandoned factory, Lina transformed it into a place for people: to swim, eat, watch a performance, make art, read, or simply spend an afternoon.

In 2016, a work trip took me to Omaha, Nebraska, and I ended up staying just across the river in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Two states in one trip made me wonder: how many had I actually visited?

The next morning, coffee in hand and notepad nearby, I started counting.

Thirty-six.

Thirty-seven.

Once I realized how close I was, I couldn’t stop.

As we commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, it felt like the right time to revisit that journey.

I traveled by plane, train, automobile, ferry, subway, bicycle, and on foot. I even completed a cross-country road trip helping a friend move home from Las Vegas to Brooklyn, much of it along historic Route 66.

I hiked to a glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park, surfed for the first time at Waikiki Beach, stood just feet away from American bison in South Dakota’s Custer State Park, and visited Cleveland, Mississippi, the birthplace of the blues.

I completed my journey to all 50 states in September 2022.

Every stop revealed another beautiful, complicated, and deeply human part of this country.
