Ten years after winning Melbourne Marathon, @thomasdocanto returned last weekend to run the fastest marathon of his life: 2:10:35, finishing second behind Eliud Kipchoge. At 40, the Sydney podiatrist and dad of two is feeling more motivated than ever – and suddenly that Olympic ambition feels a little closer.

Tom takes us inside a memorable Melbourne morning, from sharing the lead pack with Kipchoge, Jimmy Whelan and Reece Edwards, to knowing when to back off, the mind-blowing crowd support, and an emotional finish in the MCG. We also chat about the turnaround from Sydney Marathon, the illness that threatened his Melbourne plans, and how a disappointing race in Ballarat and turning 40 sparked a renewed determination.

Away from racing, there’s plenty of shoe chat, the story of meeting his wife Lana at Parkrun and an honest look at fitting elite running around work and family life.

You’ll love this chat with Tom! Listen wherever you get your podcasts 🎧

October edition of shoe geeks is very much a @thomasdocanto race recap and celebration.
But we do cover a bunch of new shoes and some listener questions. by @thomasdocanto

Melbourne Marathon. 2:10:35, a 39 sec PB, 2nd to the GOAT @kipchogeeliud and first Aussie home. Gosh Melbourne is good to me 🥰

A pretty special way to round out a big year of racing. A half mara with Kipchoge, Jimmy, Reece and Alex, plenty on my own, then into the MCG for a double fist pump.

Finishing there with that crowd, friends and fam never gets old.

Ten years since my first Melbourne in 2:20:52, still with Gary by my side, and a PB every time I’ve raced it. A good reminder that consistency and patience pay off.

Big thanks to @melbmara and @crosbietim for getting me there and looking after me, @mizunoaustralia for backing me, and @garyhoward800 and the @run_crew fam for the work, camaraderie and laughs.

To my friends and family for all the cheers, @louisedocanto for having the kiddos all weekend, and @lanadocanto for making the whole juggle possible ❤️ None of this happens without the people behind you.

Time for a little break from marathons. Already thinking about 2027 👀
