It’s my absolute honour to finally reveal my very first official @tehanifarr HELL SPAWN No.382 for @toddmcfarlane & @imagecomics ! 🙌♥️
This has been one of the most heartfelt projects I’ve ever worked on. I already loved the character and had enormous admiration for Todd, but throughout this process, I completely fell in love with the entire Spawn universe.
The stories, the characters, the rawness of the world-building, the crazy spontaneity of everything… I loved it all. I listened to around 20–30+ hours of analysis and discussion about the Spawn storyline, Al Simmons, and his allies and enemies, and somehow fell even harder in love with this universe, for more ideas ans a personal touch I also read Paradise Lost!
I wanted to create a cover that told his story as best as I could.
I wanted Al to feel alone, surrounded by shifting mists, while the incandescent Necroplasm energy radiates from him , & in the background dissolving into bats and energy. While behind him, the suggestion of a cross.
His cape is alive, constantly moving and mutating, transforming into demonic faces the closer it gets to hell; some in pain, some laughing… like a carnival of wrath.
His chains anchor him down, while the space around them slowly turns red as they descend toward the underwold, as though everything is pulling him down. And still, he sits motionless, perched & vigilant… ready to pounce at any moment.
In his hands, he holds a demon skull that may still be alive, its eye glosws, exaggerated, deformed and almost theatrical. One finger presses into its eye with absolutely no regard: brutal, invasive and blunt.
This is my homage to one of the greatest antiheroes of our time. I wanted to balance elegance with an overwhelming saturation of detail and action; something savage, but simultaneously repose and mysterious.
I hope I was able to translate even a little of that feeling i had into the piece created in Acrylics & Oils 🖤
