I was honored when @rku_views suggested we have a conversation about the REVISIT/REIMAGINE exhibition at @bannekerdouglasstubmanmuseum. This exhibition and subsequent curator-in-residence role have been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had to date. So, to have the vision for the show and my practice in general was priceless. And Rebecca really did her thing during this interview. Y’all know I’m a professional yapper, so being on the other end of an interview was an enjoyable break from my usual work. Her words encapsulate the vastness that has become my creative/cultural/curatorial practice over the past 5 years. From my interest in literature and its relation to exhibition design to the organizations and projects I’ve been a part of that have widened my scope to the needs I see within the arts & culture field. That’s why I’ve decided to attend University of the Arts London to invest in a better understanding of culture’s relationship to social sciences and how curatorial practice can lead to change within society. Thank you Rebecca and BmoreArt for sculpting my thoughts into a digestible piece of journalism; and thank you everybody who has been so support of me over the past 5 years. The growth I’ve had as a person, the wonderful experiences I’ve had, the connectivity I’ve witness, and the growing community I’ve been blessed to be apart of would not have happened if I didn’t have such immaculate people in my corner 🫶🏽 . Officially post-grad 🎓. Dissertation finished 📑. Stage walked 🚶🏽‍♂️‍➡️. Ready for the next chapter 📗. This was a daunting task, but I pushed myself hella hard to get it done.I want to thank everyone for the encouragement and giving me that spark I needed to do this ❤️.My research focused on a new framework and term for understanding an emergence within contemporary curatorial practice — I called it Transcuratorial — in which practitioners are applying curatorial approaches to lead on-going, community-rooted projects, initiatives, and organizations, and creatively contributing to cultural infrastructure through unique forms of access, connectivity, knowledge production, and support for creatives.Although it feels like this just the beginning this is the best research I’ve ever done. I was able to bring my full self to this work and I’m proud to have produced this. If you’d like to read it, DM me your email and I’ll send it over 📧 I would genuinely love feedback from people both inside and outside of curatorial/arts & cultural work — this kind of thinking grows through conversation and community. 🙏 by @thomasjames.dc

📣 HYPHA PRESENTS -‘Exiting the Forest, Into a Sea of Open Arms’ by Vibrantform @vibrantformcollective🎟️ PV: Thursday, 16th July, 6 – 9 PM🔗 RSVP via Hypha Studios’ Eventbrite📍 Hypha Gallery 1 / No. 1 Poultry💭 Vibrantform is an intergenerational uk-based collective of Black male artists, curators, and cultural workers. The collective is built on shared values of contemporary art, cultural expression, positive community impact, and mutual support. The exhibition traces how identity, belonging, and everyday experiences are continuously shaped through perception and social interactions. Through personal stories, found materials, folklore, memory, imagined futures, and the exploration of urban environments, the artists explore how Black diasporic histories are passed on, remembered, reshaped, and reimagined. Rather than following a single theme, the exhibition makes space for each artist's practice to stand on its own. It offers a portrait of a collective actively forming, questioning, and building together, while highlighting the relationships, conversations, and shared experiences that shape its work. At its heart, the exhibition also becomes a reflection of community, accountability, care, and the creative possibilities that emerge between Black men navigating artistic and personal life together.Head to our website for the full press release.👤 Featured artists:Adjani Okpu-Egbe (@adjani_okpu_egbe) Aziah Lusala (@screetart)Donald Senyah (@donzart)David Kwaw Mensah (@davidkwawmensah)Djofray Makumbu (@djofraymakumbu)Emmanuel Awuni (@black__obiwan)Geoffrey Chambers (@Geoffreychambersartist)Joshua Donkor (@joshuadonkorart) Ken Nwadiogbu (@kennwadiogbu)Kwesi Awotwi (@kwesiawotwiart)Neequaye Dreph Dsane (@dreph_)Renoir Saulter (@renoirsaulter)Sani Sani (@inxsanixty)Suley Wellings-Longmore (@suley.art)Tami Masunda (@curatingmoments)Tonye Ekine (@wherestonye)Xavier Laurent Leopold (@XavierLaurentLeopold)Curated by Thomas James @thomasjames.dc🗓 Open: 17th July – 29th August, Thursday – Friday, 12 – 8pm & Saturday – Sunday, 12 – 6pmKindly supported by @cheapsideba by @thomasjames.dc

Présentation d’archives de la Maison Saint-Joseph was developed during my residency at @msj.art.residency in Crépy-en-Valois, France. Through intuitive staging, juxtaposition, and speculative meaning-making, the exhibition functioned as a situated, embodied archive of my time there.Installed on a 10-foot wooden table in the residency’s formal dining room, the display brought together more than 30 antiques, ephemeral items, and decorative objects from the site’s collection. A responsive approach was taken to arrange this semi-maximalist display, in which formal decisions were made alongside the discovery of truths, both historical and theoretical, that existed within each object. This mode of working allowed me to explore new storytelling tools, especially when not working with contemporary art nor artists. I consider this exhibition a ‘second becoming’: one in which the curatorial operates as a method for understanding worldly intricacies, and where my practice can exist within their exploration.🌟Check out the full essay/reflection using the link in my bio🌟📸: @lutinesque by @thomasjames.dc
