Milkweed No. 9
Oil on linen panel
12” x 12”

This was painted on site at Drummond Island during my summer residency with the @saultartcenter in Sault Ste Marie MI, where I spent two weeks painting along the shores of Lake Huron and exploring the upper peninsula.

This painting is currently on display at the @cvawausau as part of my solo show “Searching for the Sacred”. The exhibition will be up for another two weeks and will conclude with a gallery talk at 2pm on Saturday, March 14th, so if you’re in central Wisconsin please come by to see the show and say hi! by @thomasjmoberg

I’m humbled to receive the Grand Prize from the inaugural @paintthetownottawa plein air competition in Ottawa, IL! This painting of the rail bridge over the Illinois River was completed over a single 10 hour session. Huge thanks go out to the trio of fishermen who gave me two bottles of water when it was clear that I was struggling under the heat.

Modern Vintage
Oil on linen panel
12” x 24”

I’m honored to announce that this painting won 3rd place at this year’s @paintgrandtraverse!

Modern Vintage was painted at the side utility lot at Bonobo Winery on Old Mission Peninsula, on an incredibly hot day over an uninterrupted 8 hour session. The title is a play on the etymology of the word vintage, which in the 15th century was the name given to an annual yield of a grape vineyard, and which we now use to indicate that something is antique. This was the first time I’d ever seen brand new oaken casks in use at a winery, and I was interested in painting the collection of equipment that was in the side lot because these objects were first and foremost tools for skilled laborers, which I feel a kinship towards. I investigated the scene and was able to line up a view across the vineyard and into the bay. Within minutes of drawing the composition at 1pm I could feel the heat of the pavement radiating up through my boots, and was unfortunately standing next to a stainless steel flatbed truck that reflected the sun back onto me from both directions. I had to clip a bandanna to the side of my hat to keep from burning up, but managed to reach a flow state and all of a sudden it was 9:30 at night. This painting was mounted in an experimental frame that I’d dreamt up just for this event, which is red cedar sandwiched between two 1/8” strips of Purple Heart facing and maple splines. taken in Crooked Tree Arts Center - Traverse City by @thomasjmoberg

I cannot express how grateful I am to have received Best of Show for my nocturne “Working Late” at this year’s Paint Livingston plein air competition! I’m always on the lookout for subjects that challenge my expectations, and it’s so gratifying when a big swing like this one connects. I had gotten the idea to compose these cement silos and form an oil sketch in the early morning, which allowed me to focus on color and tonal relationships when I returned later that night. Huge thanks to all of the folks at @overtoncountyarts and to the juror @shelbylkeefe. These last two events have surpassed my expectations, I’m really looking forward to what next year will bring!

Paintings in order of appearance:
“Working Late”, oil, 12x24
“The Arc”, oil pastel, 8x10
“Cows!”, oil pastel, 6x12
“Willow Grove”, oil, 6x6

A two-person exhibition by Jamie Weinfurter and Thomas Moberg
July 30 - August 23, 2026

Opening reception @artlinkfw in Fort Wayne, IN, from 5-8 pm on Thursday, July 30th! Join Thomas and I in celebrating our first exhibition together since our senior undergraduate exhibition at UWSP 🔥🫶🏻🎉

“Let’s Meet in Our Dreams is a two-person exhibition by Thomas Moberg and Jamie Weinfurter, featuring nocturne paintings and shadowed sculpture collages within a light-controlled space. The tension between exterior and interior space and the parallels of darkness and light are meant to draw in viewers like “moths to the flame,” highlighting our shared desire to feel at home.”

DM us for physical show cards, and we hope to see y’all there 💖

Another peek at the creation of Thomas Moberg's (@thomasjmoberg) Milkweed Mural for @washtenawcountyparks Commission. The panels were painted over the month of April, 2026, at the @lansingmakers network by Thomas and friends, Bella Fortunato (@belljar2019) and Nicole Octavia Vogt (@nox_painting), and technical support from Andy Drier. @michigan_imagery custom-cut each panel and, once the painting was completed, installed them at the Mari Lou Recreation Center's indoor pool before the pool reopened in June of 2026.

My first plein air painting of the whole season, and a demo for outside the crooked tree arts center during @paintgrandtraverse. The demo was limited to a tight radius around the arts center, so I tried to get creative to find the right composition, maximizing the distance with a broad leaf tree in the foreground and a storefront and stop sign in the distance.

It was a lot of fun to share my process with everyone, and it’s not every day you get such ideal conditions to paint under. The weather was perfect, I was painting in the shade, the audience was lovely and attentive, and Mick even brought over a table so I’d have better access to my box of oil pastels!

Just wrapped up my fourth year with @paintgrandtraverse ! Each year I push myself to try something new, and this year my goal was to focus on extremely narrow compositions, ranging from 1:2 (12” x 24”) to 1:6 (4” x 24”). These narrow formats opened up a new world of possibilities for finding compositions, really allowing me to experiment with scale and perspective.

Before the competition each year, I go out to @michigan.barnwood to get inspired by what they have in stock so that I can make a unique set of frames for the event. This year I fell absolutely in love with a few cuts of spalted maple, which has multicolored patterns, dark lines, and bleaching from different fungal growths that take over tree after it dies. I cut the maple into boards and sandwiched them with 1/8” slices of Padauk to create an even, dark red border for the face of the frames. The frames were then assembled and splined at the corners with brass to incorporate an element of flash. The brass was a real puzzle to figure out, but I’ve wanted to incorporate metals into my frames for a while now as a way to bring in some of my craft as a jeweler.

I can’t thank @crookedtreetraversecity enough for the work they put into this event every year. I’ve grown tremendously as a painter because of PGT and the support they’ve shown me. I also want to shout out my home hosts John and Lesa Seefeld, who have put me up for the past two years, fed me the greatest leftovers in the world, and reminisced with me about our shared cultural connection with Central Wisconsin. Finally, love for my dear friends @andrea4884 and @danielvener for making the drive out to TC to celebrate the weekend with me! by @thomasjmoberg
