Tom left us all far too early. I suppose that’s the hardest part of all this. We hadn’t spoken much in the time before he passed, but we’d shared enough time and conversation over the 16 years I knew him to leave an indelible mark.

I first met Tom through Alicia, my partner’s best friend. Anyone IMO Alicia loved was worth knowing, and she loved Tom deeply. It didn’t take long to understand why.

He was an odd unit in the very best sense. He questioned everything, even his own opinions. A conversation with Tom was never about winning an argument; it was about seeing where the idea might lead. He’d quietly pull a thread until the whole jumper unraveled, then smile as though he’d only just discovered it himself.

His taste in music was broad, and impeccable. He introduced me to artists I’d never have found otherwise. Mostly, I admired the way he diligently curated his music and books. Every so often he’d pare his collection back, making room for something new. I never knew exactly how he decided what stayed and what went, but I always respected the discipline. It felt less like collecting and more like tending a garden.

Another tribute to my friend Paul. On the weekend of his Melbourne tribute & memorial. With my friend @set1st
It was a very necessary catharsis for all involved. Seeing the way Paul’s frame, and physicality was mirrored by his father who spoke at the memorial was profound. It was a honour to have known you Paul-Tec, and a privilege to mourn you alongside all your friends and family. I’m gonna miss you. We all love you. by @thomaskilroc

I had a really good time painting this. And tbh it was so nice to see all the fellas that were painting this wall , but the longer I am separated from graffiti writers in the greater sense, or the “scene”, seems to be good for me.. it means I try and recreate a tattoo of Grace Jones by my guy @bongchillpark

Ode to P-Tek
Since last Tuesday, with you on my mind I keep catching glimpses of you in the world, lithe, bald silhouettes passing by, especially if they are wearing sunglasses, and for a moment it feels like you’ve just stepped out for a moment, gone overseas again, been flippant about where you’d be, or want to be, and might wander back any second.

It’s been a while since we last crossed paths, but you never really left the mental furniture.

I always had time for you, Paul. You had a rare kind of discernment.. a refusal to pretend things were better than they were. You could hate something properly, with precision and principle, and in that there was a strange integrity. Standards mattered to you, and you held them without apology. It made the rest of us sharpen up a little. I loved that about you, it was my favourite thing about you. But I must admit, at times, it was incredibly annoying.

And yet, for all that edge, you were a gentleman. You listened when people spoke.. really listened. I noticed how kind you were to my partner, how you gave her space and attention in rooms full of knuckleheads where that’s too often withheld. That stayed with me. Bitta fun writing different letters with old friends. I don’t paint enough anymore. I wonder if I’m too old to bother anymore. Far better writers my age have long stopped painting.. I know it’s just irrelevant legal stuff today, but I want to keep painting.. I guess I have a fear of becoming one of those geriatric ‘has been, that never was’, that regress in style. I’ll never understand how that occurs tbh.
