On my way to my worksite, George Washington High School, for the first day of picketing for our strike against SFUSD ✊

SFUSD continues to ask educators to give up hard-won gains of the past in order to meet our current demands for just change. You wouldn’t know this from the press, however, as they only report the district’s propaganda that only mentions the positive and not the negative changes on offer. Please come and support SFUSD educators later today, Monday the 9th, at CIVIC CENTER from 1 to 4 pm. by @thomasreddy415

Why is a math teacher at Lowell maligning the teaching of her Social Studies colleagues and encouraging students to unenroll from Ethnic Studies? This seems very unprofessional. She created an “opt-out toolkit” to direct students in how to drop the class. I wonder if her admin knows she is doing this? If SFUSD knows she is doing this? Feels like she’s using her “ideology” for “political purposes” to “radicalize” students. by @thomasreddy415

She stayed with me later at Nosh Box with the best peach toast. So delicious! Though, I now understand from Johnnie Lieske that they had to be nectarines as there wasn’t fuzz on the skin. Learned that a week ago, a humbling reminder that we still have many of the simplest facts of life and nature to learn. ❤️

SFUSD is canceling Ethnic Studies for 9th graders for the next two years (at least).

Hi Everyone.
Sorry for the early text. Not sure if you heard, but the superintendent has made the decision to pause Ethnic Studies and unenroll all 9th graders from the class. This pressure is coming from a small parent groups who has a lot of political capital with the supe.
Here is plan Dr. Su has come up with:
All 9th graders will take world history instead. You will have both 9th and 10th graders taking world history next year.
The following year, 10th graders will take US history. 10th and 11th graders will take US.
Students will take Ethnic Studies their 11th grade year to meet state requirements.
Ethnic Studies teachers will have weeks to plan for world history at the start of the school year.
This is going to have far reaching consequences for AP courses in social studies. From my understanding, since all 9th graders will have world history credits, if they decide to take AP world, it will be counted as an elective. It’s going to impact interest if students have already taken the class. Both 10th and 11th graders will be completing to take APUSH. Classes already planned out for pathways will be disrupted because of these changes across school sites.
In the middle of a budget crisis, the district plans to spend $4 million on new text to supplement the additional books needed for both U.S. and world history. There is no guarantee these texts will not arrive before the school year begins.
The supe is planning to announce this Friday, please send an email to her and the board to share your concerns by TODAY. We want her to receive a blast of emails before she makes the announcement. We want to show a force against this pause. If you need a template and emails, it’s in the link below. Please share with the rest of your department and others.
