Happy 95th birthday to Herb Cohen —lovely to celebrate with Lydia Thompson and Tom Schmidt a few days earlier this week. Herb has been a great friend and modest raconteur helpful to rescue lost histories. A designer, potter, and museum builder, he is an awfully sweet and kind man. Salut! by @thomasschmidtstudio

In 2025, the IAC welcomed over 250 new members from 59 countries around the world. These new members are primarily individual artists, alongside galleries, museums, ceramic centres, schools, curators, and educators—all united by a shared dedication to advancing the field of ceramics.

We’re introducing some of these new members, who, together, represent an inspiring cross-section of today’s outstanding ceramic talent. We look forward to getting to know all or our new members and extend a warm welcome to each of them to the IAC.

Thomas Schmidt is a United States-based ceramic artist whose practice explores the shifting relationship between craft, materiality, and digital technology. Using 3D scanning, printing, mould-making, and casting alongside traditional ceramic processes, he questions distinctions between the handmade and the digital, the natural and the artificial, and the physical and the virtual. His work examines how technology reshapes both materials and our perception of touch, surface, and presence.

We had an amazing visit to the studio of @julieandjesse in Hong Kong. Their studio is pretty magical; an encyclopedia of experimentation and research, alongside the finished work that has been distilled from all the experiments. You can also find their work currently on display at the “Making It Matters” show @mplusmuseum

Final Gallery Walkthrough 5/5: Dusk

From my recent exhibition Encoded Surface at the Dalton Gallery.

Dusk is part of a series I’ve been developing since grad school in 2009. The work began with an obsession with crumpled paper — its immediacy and complexity, and the way thousands of small facets catch light and shadow. I’ve always been fascinated by how these surfaces can resemble the energy of a mountain face, except here those formations can be folded and shaped by hand.

Through mold-making and casting, these fleeting gestures become frozen in time.

This piece is part of my Intervals Series, where metallic prints are interspersed across fields of crumpled ceramic tile. The title references musical intervals — the spaces between notes that create harmony, tension, or dissonance. In these works, I’m interested in what kind of visual intervals emerge when reflective metallic surfaces interact with the fractured geometry of the tile.

Gallery Walkthrough 4/5: Tension and Rest

From my recent exhibition Encoded Surface at the Dalton Gallery.

Tension and Rest grew out of a simple material experiment while I was a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Instead of draining slip-casting molds after a few minutes, I allowed the clay to settle inside the molds over several weeks.

As moisture slowly evaporated, rings formed along the interior surfaces, each one recording a different moment in time. During firing, internal tensions caused the solid cubes to fracture and split apart, but the clay fused back together in the kiln, preserving the entire history of the event within a single form.

These experiments eventually expanded into a larger body of work built from fractured blocks, remnants, and accumulated material traces.

Gallery Walkthrough 3/5: Recycled China Triptych

From my recent exhibition Encoded Surface at the Dalton Gallery.

This project began during my time teaching in Beijing through the Alfred + CAFA Ceramic Design for Industry program. While living in China, I became fascinated by the immense scale of ceramic production, the deep regional histories of porcelain, and the amount of material discarded during manufacturing.

Working with artist Jeffrey Stephen Miller(@jeffreystephenmiller), we began experimenting with ways to repurpose ceramic waste by crushing rejected porcelain into aggregate and pouring molten recycled aluminum over the shards. The aluminum curls around the fragments and locks them together as it cools, creating a surface suspended somewhere between geology, industry, and craft.

This piece incorporates recycled porcelain baijiu bottles originally produced in Jingdezhen.

Gallery Walkthrough 2/5: Morphology Series

From my recent exhibition Encoded Surface at the Dalton Gallery.

The Morphology Series uses 3D modeling software as a kind of digital sketchbook — a space to experiment with form, contour, and the behavior of clay during printing. But not everything that works on the screen survives translation into physical material.

For me, the work exists in that back-and-forth between digital space and the unpredictability of fabrication. The horizontal layering of 3D-printed clay became central to the series, eventually leading to contrasting vertical patterns that reference textiles and shifting perception.

These forms suggest vessels, but the focus gradually moves away from utility and toward surface, rhythm, and the experience of viewing.

Gallery Walkthrough 1/5: Future Flora

From my recent exhibition Encoded Surface at the Dalton Gallery.

Future Flora was created during a residency in Jingdezhen, China, as a reflection on the evolving identity of ceramics in the post-digital age, and first shown at The Center for Craft @centerforcraft

The work is constructed from porcelain modules that branch outward into a tangled network of spheres, connecting historical pottery shards, industrial ceramics, 3D-printed components, and collected artifacts from different moments in time. I think of these objects as carrying different histories and modes of making, all suspended together within a single material system.

The surface imagery draws from altered photographs of moss and lichen collected in the forests around Jingdezhen, blending references to Chinese porcelain traditions with forms of growth that feel unpredictable and constantly evolving.
