Kenneth Deer, Mohawk, activist and journalist on the Kahnawake reservation in Canada. He co-wrote the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, a treaty the U.S. and Canada do not recognize. In the longhouse, which served as a parliament building for the Mohawk, Kenneth explains how democracy worked among the Haudenosaunee when in Europe democracy was nowhere near. The different clans deliberated amongst each other until unanimous consensus was reached. The men where equal to women in this proces. On Kenneth’s knee the ‘two row wampum belt’ symbol of the two row wampum treaty of around 1620 between the Haudenosaunee and the Dutch government. by @thomassykora
