Creating “The Kelate Kid” parody poster in collaboration with @apom.my isn’t just an artistic project; it’s a personal reflection of my life. Growing up as a minority Chinese in Kelantan, a predominantly Malay state, has shaped me in countless ways. This piece is a tribute to those experiences and the lessons I’ve learned along the way, inspired by the cult classic “The Karate Kid.”

Much like Daniel LaRusso, I’ve discovered the value of hard work, tolerance and the wisdom that comes from embracing different cultures, and the belief that what truly matters is what’s in your heart. Through this illustration, I want to share my story and celebrate the shared values that unite us as Malaysians, beyond our diverse backgrounds, races, and religions. My other half has always wanted to visit the Arashiyama bamboo forest in Kyoto, and so we went :)

Walking through all that bamboo felt strangely familiar. It immediately brought me back to when I played Super Shinobi (The Revenge of Shinobi to be exact), a 1989 Sega video game my brother introduced me to when we were kids.

Standing there, surrounded by all those bamboo trees, it felt like I had somehow stepped into the game for a while. Except this time, there weren’t any ninjas flying in from nowhere, sneaking up behind us and taking away half our lifeline 🥷

Came across this little place in Gion simply called @gion_duck_noodles in Gion, Kyoto.

This isnt some “hidden gem” bs or anything like that, we literally just happened to walk past it while walking around Gion.

But damn, the🦆 ramen was SUPER GOOD. Easily the best bowl of ramen we had throughout our Japan trip.

Oh ya, the interesting part was the ordering process though, you literally order using emojis. Just pick your emoji and hope for the best 🦝🦝

Comfort Food 🍚

There’s something about these simple Japanese fast-food joints that I really love. 🍚

This is Matsuya @matsuya_foods in Kyoto. One of those places I can happily eat at anytime. It’s quick, tasty, affordable, and the portions are just right. Nothing fancy or complicated, just good food. 😊

We arrived in Kyoto by noon, left our bags at the hotel, and took a bus to Gion. No rest, no itinerary. We just wandered around Gion to see what it had to offer. ☺️

And this was only the beginning…

While wandering around Osaka, my other half and I found this old arcade centre called Kasuga Gorakujo. The place felt frozen in time. Street Fighter was still running on the machines.

Funny how an empty arcade seat can suddenly bring back an entire childhood.

It must have been a century ago! As soon as i lay my hands on the arcade controls, that old familiar feelings of excitement and wonder came flooding in again. Though the graphics may seem dated compared to today’s games, nothing beats the feeling of winning the game against your brothers or cousins & shout “Yay! Yay!” In their face! & taunting them for another game which you didn’t really want to. Just to spike up their anxiety and made them beg for another round makes my day! 😈

For a moment, it felt like time didn’t really move at all…🥲

2 minutes from Osaka Castle, we stopped by the Kaiyodo Figure Museum. I had one thing on my mind, the Yoroi samurai armor. I’ve always been drawn to that armour. Didn’t expect much (actually i did, Godzillas, Ultraman, Kamen Rider…) but the gachapon machine had other plans.

We walked out with a miniature version of the Yoroi samurai in my pocket ✌️swipe to see the gachapon samurai ive got :)

While visiting Osaka Castle, I felt something I couldn’t quite explain, not the wind, not the air, not the crowd…but something colder, something ancient. As if a samurai’s presence still lingers, quietly watching those who pass through. 🏯
