Breakfast in Kolkata for ₹60. A bottle of water and a soft drink for ₹40 together. Cheap food sounds great, but what about the rest of the trip?

My full Kolkata budget video is now on YouTube: THOORS WORLD (@Thoor76). See what I paid for a hostel bed, food and taxis.

What usually takes the biggest share of your travel budget?

One taxi ride in Kolkata can cost more than your bed for the night. My air-conditioned dorm bed was ₹650, while my Uber rides went up to ₹800. Is Kolkata really cheap? Your choices make the difference.

My full Kolkata budget video premieres tomorrow, 3 November at 15:00 GMT+1, on YouTube: THOORS WORLD (@Thoor76).

Would you save on transport or pay for convenience?

You come for the colours. Stay for the people behind them.

Beneath Howrah Bridge, flowers are carried, sorted and turned into garlands for worship, weddings and celebrations. Every beautiful detail is also someone’s daily work.

Would you start your morning here?

Before the celebration, there are these hands.

In Kolkata’s Kumartuli neighbourhood, religious figures take shape through straw, clay, paint and remarkable skill.

We didn’t share enough English for an interview. But watching the artists work gave me plenty to appreciate.

What detail caught your eye?

A friendship that began in Varanasi brought me into a family celebration in Bengal.

Sayan invited me to experience Durga Puja with his family. First came the immersion of their family’s figure in a pond. Later, I joined the community as they carried their larger figure roughly six kilometres to the river.

Two farewells, one unforgettable invitation.

Has someone you met while travelling ever invited you into their traditions?

A monument fit for a queen… who never visited India. 👑🇮🇳

Kolkata’s Victoria Memorial holds more than a beautiful view. Opened in 1921, this marble landmark was built to honour Queen Victoria—and today serves as a museum in an independent India.

Look closely above the dome: can you spot the Angel of Victory?

Would you visit for the architecture, the history—or both? ✨

Follow @Thoor76 for the stories behind the places.

An entire city welcomes a daughter home. ❤️✨

In Kolkata, Durga Puja brings together faith, family and extraordinary creativity. Goddess Durga is also welcomed as Uma—the beloved daughter returning to her parents’ home.

Artists turn temporary festival structures called pandals into incredible works of art. Communities come together, while the celebrations support livelihoods—from idol makers and drummers to food vendors.

Then comes the emotional farewell, with the hope of welcoming her again next year. 🌊

Which part fascinates you most—the art, the traditions or the community spirit?
