We’re not just raising a PK. We are raising a woman of God.

And one of our greatest responsibilities isn’t simply raising her in church. It’s raising her to know God for herself.

We don’t want Jesus to just be Daddy’s job or the place our family goes every Sunday. We want the presence of God to be a normal part of her childhood.

So there are three things we’re trying to be intentional about while she’s still little.

First, we pray for her, and we pray with her.

She hears us talk to God out loud. She hears us pray at home. She sees that following Jesus isn’t something we turn on when we walk into church. We serve Jesus as a family.

Second, we give her space to pray.

She’s little. She doesn’t understand everything yet. Her prayers aren’t complicated or polished. But they don’t need to be.

She knows God is real. She knows she can talk to Him. And I believe God hears every one of those innocent little conversations. She prays for friends and family. She prays for the requests she hears at church. And sometimes her prayers challenge us or break our hearts as she prays for people who have hurt us or silently disappeared.

Third, we believe church and worship belong to her too.

Church isn’t adult time that children happen to attend. It’s a place for her to listen, sing, learn, pray, worship and build relationships of her own.

Our goal isn’t to raise a little girl who someday says, “My dad was a pastor.” Our prayer and aim is to raise a young woman who someday says, “I knew His presence before I was old enough to understand how precious that was.”

We can’t choose Jesus for our children. But we can build a home where they see Him, hear about Him, talk to Him, worship Him, and watch their parents genuinely follow Him.

“As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” — Joshua 24:15

If it ain’t grape @welchs it ain’t God’s will.

For years, I debated facts about communion. Wine or grape juice? One cup or many? Loaf or wafers. Prepared trays or the put together pre-package… and one day I looked up and realized that the debates were a distraction from the thing that matters!

Why aren’t we taking it more often? Jesus didn’t say, “Debate this.” He said, “Do this in remembrance of Me.”

Some churches celebrate the Lord’s Supper so infrequently that they can’t remember the last time they remembered Him around His table... typically producing people who don’t remember the last time they sensed his presence.

When communion becomes an occasional holiday observance, “Christians” can begin treating Jesus like an occasional priority.

No, I don’t believe the bread literally becomes His body or the cup literally becomes His blood in the catholic transubstantiation sense…But I also refuse to believe communion is merely an empty ritual.

Something sacred happens when the gathered church obeys Christ, examines itself, proclaims His death, remembers the gospel, and communes with Him by faith.

Can I explain every spiritual reality that takes place? No. There are mysteries in our faith that cannot be reduced to human language. But mystery doesn’t diminish reality.

May we never become so consumed with arguing over what’s in the cup that we forget to drink from it together.

A broken relationship cannot carry biblical correction well.

Some PKs don’t rebel because they hate their parents.
Sometimes they rebel because correction is the ONLY time they receive focused attention.
The only time there’s:
conversation…
emotion…
pursuit…
concern…
contact…
is after failure.

And eventually a child subconsciously learns:
“If I struggle… at least I’ll finally be seen.”

That is heartbreaking.
Biblical correction only works properly inside biblical relationship.

“Whom the Lord loves He chastens.”
God corrects His children because He is PRESENT with His children.
And grace is not pretending consequences don’t exist.
Grace says:
“Yes, there are consequences…
but there is still hope for your future.”
This may have been one of the deepest moments yet from the Preachers Kids Podcast.

“The church will survive if you take 3 or 4 weeks off and sit next to your child.”

Some pastors need permission to hear that.
Your family is not an inconvenience to ministry.
Ignoring your home while maintaining a platform is not faithfulness.
And honestly?
Some PKs have never gotten to see their parents simply worship as normal Christians because ministry always came first.
Maybe your son or daughter doesn’t need another sermon from you right now.
Maybe they need your presence.
Your consistency.
Your attention.
Your humility.
Because if you’re preaching things publicly that you refuse to model privately…
eventually your family will feel the disconnect.
Sometimes the most spiritual thing a pastor can do is step away long enough to get his house in order.
This conversation on the Preachers Kids Podcast got painfully honest.

Every sin has consequences.
The prodigal son learned that the hard way.
He hit rock bottom.
Lost everything.
Found himself broken and empty.
But the story didn’t end in the pigpen.
It ended with a Father saying:
“Come home.”
That’s the heart of God.
And honestly…
some church kids know how to hear sermons about grace for strangers…
but wonder if there’s grace for THEM when THEY fail.
Parents —
it’s easy to preach forgiveness from a platform.
But can your son or daughter experience that same grace in your home?
The Gospel is not just something we preach publicly.
It has to shape how we respond privately too.
This moment from the Preachers Kids Podcast was powerful.

“PK” didn’t stand for “Pastor’s Kid” to me…
It stood for:
Perfect Kid.
Perfect at church.
Perfect in public.
Perfect for the congregation.
And honestly?
That pressure can crush a kid.
One conversation changed everything for me.
My parents sat me down and said:
“We’re not going to tell the church staff about this.”
That moment gave me room to breathe.
Not room to rebel.
Room to be honest.
Pastors’ kids need discipline.
But they also need safety.
They need to know:
“My parents love me more than they love protecting an image.”
Some PKs never open up because they’re terrified their struggle will become church gossip.
Your child should not feel like their mistakes will become sermon illustrations.
This was one of the most honest moments from the Preachers Kids Podcast.

“Your child is not a threat to your platform.”

That line hit hard.
Too many ministry families feel pressure to maintain an image instead of building a healthy home.

And some pastors are so terrified of public embarrassment…
they accidentally push their kids further away trying to protect a reputation.

But hear this clearly:
Protecting your image while losing your heritage is NOT ministry success.
If your platform cannot survive honesty, weakness, struggle, or restoration…
then maybe the platform became an idol.
Your kids are not interruptions to ministry.
They ARE ministry.
This conversation on the Preachers Kids Podcast was deeply needed.

Some pastors would cancel dinner with their family…
…but would never cancel a meeting at church.

That’s a problem.
Jesus constantly withdrew from ministry activity to spend time with the Father.
Not because ministry wasn’t important.
But because relationship mattered first.
And if Jesus modeled intentional withdrawal for relationship…
why do we think nonstop ministry is healthy for our families?
Your kids should never grow up believing:
“The church always came before us.”
And PKs —
don’t reject loving correction just because it hurts.
Discipline isn’t hatred.
It’s love that refuses to let you self-destruct.
This conversation got REAL on the Preachers Kids Podcast.
