Happy Hump Day folks! And, what a doozy we have today, as we cross the threshold of this cosmically scaled hump to "reopen" our society.

This messaging at my local coffee shop struck me because it is so close to the language we use in our love relationships. "I Promise" is not something we say lightly - it is something we approach with humility and reverence.
*
Meanwhile, let's also remember that there are many perspectives on how and when we should do this, but that none of us have our opinions without our own WHY. I'd venture to guess that all of our why's match up - because we care about others - even if our actions look very different.
*
Finally, let's look at this reemergence as the opportunity that it is and make the best of it by participating in commerce that is relational, and not just transactional. Transactional capitalism is so late winter 2020!
*
Stay safe. Stay sane. And please wear your mask because you care. Have a nice day.

Let's talk about containers! Taken up cooking or baking over the past month? Surprised how much food you produced and the dearth of containers you had to store that product? Fret no more!

Remember how your grandmother always reused everything? There was a reason for that: she had most likely lived through some pretty hard times - a depression, a siege, living with your grandfather - something not unlike a pandemic.
*
Much of our food comes in packaging that can be reutilized. Ziploc bags can be washed easily; drying is the "hard" part. Simply stick another kitchen item in that thing to allow air to flow (but don't poke holes in it!). Jars of all sizes can be reused. Soak them in dishwater to remove the labels, then run them through the dishwasher. Paper packaging can be composted (or recycled).

Don't worry, you've got plenty of time to do these things. In fact, you've still got enough time to form new habits before this pandemic is over. Have a nice day!

Anyone else caught in the middle of a pandemic, without work, and choose not to resort to a consumption based solution? I present to you: alternatives!
*
First, identify the issue (i.e. facemasks): the purpose of the mask is to reduce transmission of COVID 19 by containing respiratory droplets and aerosolized infectious material.
*
Second, identify the resources you have available to you - get creative. A napkin? Works perfectly. Those swag bandanas from blahbediblah 2009? Good choice. Your favorite non-woolen scarf? That'll do! I have money that I can spend? Buy that sucker!
*
Implement solution.
*
Another thing to keep in mind - your motives. Keep them as abstract and altruistic as possible and work down to the personal from there. Does this serve the greater good? Does the implementation of solution provide leadership / solidarity / accessibility? Will this help my neighbor? Does it look cool?
*
Do you start to think about things differently by exercising this process? Apply this to everything! Do you find yourself Marie Kondo-ing Marie Kondo? See how many of the issues we are working through - and their institutionalized solutions - start to fall away?

#FBF One year ago this week, I had the opportunity to share space with some dear friends, collaborators, and their families. We shared drinks, watched a beautiful sunset, and enjoyed a traditional Danish meal that was made with love and shared with gusto. This fuzzy photo shows the party as we exchanged thanks and loving goodbyes - until we meet again.

And while I miss the physicality of this particular event, I am inspired by our collective ability to create new spaces and places for new types of experiences. Even as I write this, a friend is playing his records and broadcasting them to the world as a personal love letter. Earlier this week I attended a virtual dance party - and have never experienced catharsis and ecstasy as profoundly. *
So, to all of you out there, creating new ways for us to connect, to those that facilitate opportunities for interactions, to those that create art that provokes thought and cajoles us into a new awareness, to those that create (or created) music that allow us to travel without constraints of space or time, to any of you that are living your purpose so that we can all live and love - thank you, I love you. Until we meet again...

Did anyone else feel "that" yesterday? That was a doozy, folks!

I knew I needed comfort last night when I started preparing this meal, so the mac and cheese was a foregone conclusion. The salad was for posterity (and to use the perishable items that were lying around).
*
As I prepared this meal, I received a text from a friend that said RIP John Prine and I was so glad I hadn't started anything more elaborate. Somehow, this meal was just what I needed... Please take care of yourselves out there people, and "let food be thy medicine" - without judgement and with a side of salty tears, as needed.
