There is an American Kestrel pair in the neighborhood park by my house right now. I took my dog Bear for a walk and got lucky to see one of them perched. This is actually my first time photographing alongside the dog. He’s a very good boy. 😊 #kestrel #birdphotography by @thrashersoneverything

Life is what you make of it, and I’m convinced that Gambel’s quails take this to heart. They do everything with gusto, from calling to running, to more calling and running, and even occasionally flying their big, ground-preferred bodies to a new tree when I come fee-fi-fo-fumming down the path with my camera in hand, mumbling about fly catchers that didn’t fly or catch or appear for me. #gambelsquail #arizonabirds #birdphotography by @thrashersoneverything

Tres Rios, if not the perfect photography spot makes up for it in vibes and scenery, and I think you just gotta go and spend time there to appreciate it. Unlike a lot of other urban birding spots I love the birds and the place. Not that parks can’t inspire, but they don’t for me in the same way that being next to a watershed as historically significant as the Salt River does. I’m biased. Also, it’s just a walk to Base and Meridian which is another beautiful spot. That is where people saw the Piratic Flycatcher. #osprey #fallmigration #wetlands by @thrashersoneverything

This is a Raptor account now. Last summer, I met a photographer from Colorado at Tres Rios wetlands. He was frustrated because he wanted to see Harris‘s Hawks. I told him completely seriously that there were a bunch in the park by my house. It’s funny how birding works like that sometimes. I posted this immature Northern Yellow Warbler a couple weeks ago, but it was mixed in with a fly catcher. I really wasn’t sure about the ID at first! I’d like to get out to the wetlands early in the morning this week. Last week was a little slower for me as far as seeing birds. I’m seeing less warblers and more raptors. Second edition of birds and the music that they listen to. Canada Goose gets their kid on the weekends. Drives a Dodge Dakota with all terrain tires, and the radio is always set to 106.5 Pix 106, playing Goose’s favorite classic rock. The music is always loud, and the crossing guards always give Goose a look when they drop their kid off at school. Van Halen, George Thorogood, and Pantera are some of Canada Goose’s favorites. The truck is late on emissions testing and the city bill is overdue, but Canada Goose forgets it all when they’re cruising down the highway thinking about soccer fields and well mowed grass. by @thrashersoneverything

A morning walk through South Mt. Preserve yielded some lovely arid birds! An American Kestrel, Gilded Flicker and Curve Billed Thrasher. This week I’ve seen the return of our wintering birds. White-crowned sparrows, Ruby-crowned kinglets, Say’s Phoebes, and Yellow-rumped Warblers. I guess fall migration hasn’t ended, but I’ve been busy chasing passers through since July, so I’m glad to see things slow down just a tad. 😊 #kestrel #falcon #birdphotography by @thrashersoneverything

Today I’m featuring my garden! The first picture was taken on today’s date one year ago. The second photo is from this morning, exactly one year later. I hope, if you are endeavoring to build a garden, that you find a way to start as soon as your hands allow you. Because one day, you’ll just start planting, and if you’re like me, you wont quit til it’s done and there’s not a crack left to stick a shrub. We get lots of beautiful birds and butterflies in this garden, and I never get tired of sitting down on a chair and admiring all the work that nature kinda does for me!! Almost none of these plants are on irrigation, and the ones that are got water four times this summer. Fruit trees? One of the ways I remedy being homesick is by looking for these warblers. They remind that home is never far away and that birds carry their homes with them. Each pit stop is a part of that bird, a tree, a bush, or a piece of deadwood that forms a good vantage point, although these warblers are usually just feeding and peeping! I hope you keep looking for home and find many in the places you love and see. 😊 Birds shown are a Townsend’s, Nashville, Black-throated Grey, Orange Crowned, Northern Yellow, Wilson’s, Lucy’s, MacGillivray’s, and Townsend’s.
