THE LOWER MERCED PASS “DOPE LAKE” CRASH (1977)

In the winter of 1977, a twin-engine smuggling plane carrying 6,000 pounds of marijuana crashed into Lower Merced Pass Lake deep within the backcountry of Yosemite National Park. The aircraft tragically sank beneath the frozen lake, killing both pilots and leaving its cargo trapped under the ice.

When news eventually reached Yosemite’s Camp 4 climbing community rumors spread quickly and climbers began making the trek into the park to discover bale after bale of marijuana preserved in the lake. What followed became one of the most interesting stories in climbing history, as climbers, rangers, and federal authorities all fumbled to recover what remained of the wreck.

One of the most fascinating relics left behind from the incident is the homemade souvenir tee. Produced by Yosemite climbers shortly after the event, the shirt features a simple printed on graphic of Lower Merced Pass Lake alongside the phrase “I Got Mine At Lower Merced Pass Lake” and a small cannabis leaf. Like much of the climbing culture of the 1970s, the shirt was created by the community for the community itself. Today, surviving examples are exceptionally scarce and serve as a wearable piece of Yosemite folklore, documenting a moment when climbing culture, clothing, and one of the strangest incidents in National Park history collided.
