Join Delaney Erickson (@delaneybeestudio) and I for Memory in the Margins, a junk journaling workshop ๐Ÿ“”

As part of ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜บ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜”๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, we are inviting you to slow down and make something with your hands ๐Ÿคฒ This junk journaling workshop grew from a simple idea: that memory lives not only in what we see but in what we touch, arrange, and hold. Bring a photograph that means something to you, whether it is a picture of yourself, someone you love, or a moment from childhood or more recent years, and transform it into a personal scrapbook page ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Using simple, accessible materials, you will layer your image with color, texture, and handwritten notes, creating a small and tangible piece of your own history โœ๏ธ๐ŸŽจ

Think of it as a return to the elementary school art room, where getting lost in glue, paper, and scraps felt like the most natural thing in the world โœ‚๏ธ๐Ÿ“Ž No artistic experience is necessary, only a willingness to sit with what a single image holds and to leave with something you made yourself ๐Ÿค

๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜บ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜”๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด brings together ten Metro Detroit based artists whose work in installation, fiber, and painting explores memory as both a personal archive and a shared cultural inheritance. The exhibition considers nostalgia not as quiet melancholy, but as a complex negotiation between who we were and who we have become. It observes the distance between the world we once knew and the reality we now inhabit. Each artist approaches this territory differently, though a common thread runs through the exhibition: memory is never static. It shifts with distance, softens or sharpens with time, and often surfaces unexpectedly through sensation rather than thought.ย

This past weekend was nothing short of magical. It felt like a pinch-me moment, and it flew by far too quickly! I have always dreamed of becoming a curator, so having my first in-person exhibition means the world to me. Iโ€™ve been quietly planning this show for over a year and a half, and seeing everything finally come to fruition is deeply satisfying.

Thank you to every artist in this exhibition who trusted me with their work. The stories told through each painting, installation, fiber work, and sculpture are so meaningful to me, and because every artist creates from the heart, that sincerity is felt throughout the entire show.

Hearing people say they not only loved the work but truly connected with the stories behind it was quiet confirmation of my curatorial approach. Learning that some visitors got teary-eyed while others couldnโ€™t help but smile filled me with so much joy.

Sydney Frakes is an American curator and Creative Director based in Detroit, Michigan. She is the Creator and Director of Threads: The Art Exchange @threadsartexchange , a contemporary art platform she established in 2023 with artist Alea Brown. Frakes has developed a distinctive curatorial practice centered on artists whose work engages memory, identity, culture, and lived experience.

The Intimacy of Memories, curated by Frakes, was inspired by her own memories of family and her Detroit roots. The exhibition brings together 10 Detroit-based artists @detroitcityarts whose work explores the ways personal and collective histories shape how we understand ourselves and the world around us. Through painting, photography, fiber, and other forms of visual expression, the exhibition considers nostalgia, longing, family, place, and the enduring presence of the past.

๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜บ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜”๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด curated by Sydney Frakes (@sydneynfrakes) is an exhibition about nostalgia, the quiet ache of longing for a simpler time, and the growing distance between the world we once knew and the one we live in now. Through works that engage sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch, the exhibition awakens the memories we carry with us, often without realizing how close to the surface they remain. Like flipping through old childhood photographs, driving past a shuttered elementary school, or catching the scent of a grandmotherโ€™s perfume, each piece invites us to linger in the places and moments that shaped us. In a time of uncertainty, this immersive exhibition offers a dialogue between memory, movement, and culture, an ode to the past and the tenderness it still holds.

โ€œA painting begins when you are walking down the street and notice the details of a light that seemed interesting to you, or the colors of a tree in autumn, or the force of the sea in its direction and color. Painting begins in the heart and in the observations I make in my daily life.โ€ - Paula Valenzuela Antuฬnez (@paulavalenzuelaantunez)

There are no words to describe the moment you get to experience art you've seen in books and on television, finally in person.

๐˜ˆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ by @asherald, on display at the High Museum of Art, was a delight from the moment I walked in until I viewed the last painting. The faces, the vivid colors, the tiniest details in blades of grass and the stitching on a shirt, made this exhibition an unforgettable one.

The exhibition spans nearly twenty years of Sherald's work, and across that span her subjects share a certain groundedness. They seem settled in themselves, unconcerned with performing for an outside gaze. What catches you is the stillness in their eyes, a stillness that asks you to slow down and notice the details she's chosen to include: the fold of a hand at rest, the pattern of a fabric, the minimal jewelry, and the most striking background colors illuminating her subjects. By the end, identity in these paintings feels less like something assigned and more like something each person is quietly, continuously shaping for themselves.
