Pulled out my “Second City” Chicago canvas from Third Coast Stitches today. This one has had me stumped for a bit because I knew exactly what I wanted to do with the background — I just had to figure out how to make it work.

The inspiration? Those vintage Chicago Fire bricks. 🧱

The trick was getting the scale right. Too big, too small, wrong proportions…and the whole thing would be off. After a little needlepoint math, a whole lot of counting canvas, and some sketching, I finally got the ratio figured out and mapped the bricks onto the canvas.

And I think this laid out REALLY well!

I kitted the focal point while I was at Third Coast Stitches, but I knew those bricks couldn’t be a solid color. That just wouldn’t be true to the inspiration. So I worked with the ladies at The Courtly Canvas to find the perfect variegated Threadworx threads to get all that variation you see in the real bricks.

Check it out alongside my inspiration photo, the freshly sketched brick layout, and all those threads ready to bring it to life.

Now that I’ve solved the brick problem, I suppose it’s time to actually stitch them. 😂

Such a fun (f)inish! This was the perfect little canvas to bring along on our family beach trip. This kit got me out of my usual thread comfort zone and try some new fun threads.

Perched beneath a canopy of a flowering tree, this wise owl vows to watch over the Night Garden where flowers whisper, stars glow, and needles stitch dreams by the light of moonbeams.

you are someone who has been following all the posts for the amazing new designs that will be released at Nashville. hopefully you’ve seen some information about the Night Garden collaboration: 20+ designers have all used the same four ThreadworX threads to create a design no bigger than 60 x 60 with the theme of Night Garden. So, here is my contribution to that collaboration! Release #4 of 7 is called Night-Blooming Cereus. A cereus is a type of cactus that only blooms at dusk, making it a perfect flower to highlight for a night garden themed design. Thread packs will be available, allowing you to stitch many of the Night Garden designs (swipe to see pic of threads). I’m hoping there will be someone out there who will stitch all of them on one big piece of fabric - wouldn’t that be amazing??? If you like this or any of my designs or any of the new patterns you’ve seen posted recently, make sure to contact your LNS or ONS to pick up a copy for you in Nashville!
