“This plant will die or be alive because of the earth. The plant takes refuge in the earth, the soil. But earth entrusts herself to me because each leaf that falls down and decomposes makes the soil richer. We know that the layer of soil that is rich and beautiful has been made by the vegetation. If our earth is green and beautiful, it is because of this vegetation. Therefore, while the vegetation needs the earth, the earth also needs the vegetation to express herself as a beautiful planet. So when we say ‘I entrust myself to earth,’ I, the plant, have to hear the other version also: ‘ Earth entrusts herself to me.’ “An excerpt from “Being Peace” written by Thich Nhat Hanh. Even though this paragraph is relating back to the Buddha, I find great meaning in the reciprocity he describes we have with the Earth. Catnip is one of my favorite herbs because it’s something I get to enjoy with my cats! How special that we can both enjoy a cup of catnip tea together? Catnip can make our feline friends euphoric and sometimes get zoomies! For humans it’s great for:-anxiety-headaches-cold and flu-insomnia-upset tummyAnd many other uses. It’s a very gentle herb and works great for children and even colicky babies. As an artist I often struggle to find inspiration and time to actually make art. On the days I have no energy and just feel like scrolling on my phone in front of the TV, I’ll often pull up Canva and just play around with making graphics. I’ve found it to be a fun, low-stakes way to explore creativity. In April I lost my father. Ever since I have been called to strengthen my relationship with grief and Death. A month later I started my poison path journey with @honeybee_herbals and a small group of amazing women. Poison Hemlock was the first plant we sat with and I felt humbled in its presence. I often struggle with finding my words and I wanted to transmute the experience I had with this plant spirit in a way others could understand- so I wrote a poem. I can’t think of a better way of celebrating the “Fourth of July” than spending time with this land that provides us with so much. I spent my day harvesting St. John’s Wort in the foothills of the Arapahoe and Ute nations and laid in the river with the company of a good friend. I honor this land greatly and thank it for uplifting me with such a joyous day.
