Hi, it's me, Feira the harmless 🐀 hunter
❤️🐾😁

The golden rule of no dogs on the bed? Well… that one quietly disappeared a long time ago. 😂

Nola has claimed our bed as her ultimate safe place — the spot where she can truly relax and let go ❤️🙏🐾

She's still a dog with some pretty big fears to deal with, so seeing her this completely at ease is something we treasure. ❤️

She's getting a little greyer around her mouth and apparently a little less concerned about personal space. I was taking close-up photos of her nose, practically right in her face, and she didn't even open an eye. Not even a twitch. 😂

Good news about Feira! ❤️

The blood test results are in, and we're very happy! Her pancreatic fat levels have almost halved, a huge improvement compared to last time. This means her pancreas is doing much better.

She can continue eating Royal Canin Anallergenic, and we're even allowed to introduce a hypoallergenic treat! We had hoped to try an unusual protein source like camel or ostrich, but the vet wasn't comfortable with that. So we'll try an approved treat instead.

Her B12 is too low, although thankfully not as low as we feared. She'll be taking B12 tablets from a regular human pharmacy for the next 12 weeks, as veterinary versions often contain additives or flavourings she can't have. We'll check her levels again afterwards to see how well she's absorbing it.

Meanwhile, we're trying to stop her from eating soil while digging for mice (always a chance her intestines react bad to it). A little mesh muzzle was supposed to help, but she absolutely hates it and removes it within seconds! 😂

Next week we'll try reducing her prednisone dose again. If that doesn't work, she'll go back to her current dose, for the rest of her life.

🐾 For those wondering about her rather long nails: they were actually trimmed 3 weeks ago. Her blood vessels extend very far into her nails, so only tiny amounts can be removed each time. Her dewclaws also curl around and need trimming every six weeks too. As Feira absolutely hates having her nails trimmed, we alternate between the vet and the groomer. Don't worry, her paws are well looked after! ❤️

One step at a time, but today we're celebrating some really good news 🙏❤️🐾

Another vet update for Feira ❤️🐾

Today we had another weekly consultation with the vet and had blood taken to check Feira's vitamin B12 levels and pancreatic lipase (she was so very very brave 💪🧡)

Chronic intestinal inflammation can prevent Feira from absorbing enough B12, which might explain why we're still struggling to get her symptoms under control.

Her pancreatic values were already slightly elevated, and her current anallergenic food contains 17% fat. If her pancreatic lipase has increased further, her current diet food may no longer be suitable. Switching to a food that is both Anallergenic and low-fat leaves us with just one option: a new and extremely expensive diet that can only be ordered through vets. 😔
Like the vet said: let's hope it will not be necessary 🤞

We're also reducing her prednisone dose back to the level she was on a week ago. It will lower the side effects and fits in an attempt to keep her on an as low as possible dose for the rest of her life.

We're hoping to get the blood test results next Friday. It's also Feira's vet's last working day before she goes on maternity leave 🤰 Feira's care will then be handed over to another vet, she already studied the files.

We still hope we can get Feira's chronic enteropathy under better control. With a normal functioning stomach and much less inflamation of the intestines. A complete resolution isn't realistic, but we try to get as far as possible. ❤️🐾🙏

Next friday = next vet consultation

Feira, it's lunch time! 🍗

I found this treatball I bought a while ago. Back than Feira didn't like it. How different now 😁.
It took several rounds to put all kibble in it, so it took a very dedicated Feira almost 10 minutes to eat her 45 gram portion dietfood 🥳🐾🙏

Fun thing is that Nola wants to play the games too, but when she finds a kibble of Feira she spits it out 🤣

A day spent without gazing into the distance is a lost day, according to Nola.

Breakfast is served! 🐾❤️

It breaks my heart to see how desperately hungry Feira is. The prednisone makes her brain think she’s starving, even though she really isn’t. 🥺

Despite her slow feeder, she practically inhales her food. No chewing, just hoovering it up! And with her already struggling intestines, that’s far from ideal.

So we’re getting creative! We offer her several small meals throughout the day, as often as possible. One meal, we scatter her kibble around the living room; the next, she gets to forage in her snuffle mat or solve a little food puzzle. We also keep a small portion of her daily food aside to give her an occasional kibble as a reward throughout the day. Anything to keep her happy and slow down her eating! ❤️

Unfortunately, even with the increased prednisone, her tummy is still making an awful fuss again. We’re hoping the medication will help more soon.

And through it all, she’s the sweetest little patient you could imagine. We just want her to feel better. Fingers and paws crossed! 🤞🐶

P.S. Nola is so happy she's not the subject of my camera right now 🤣

Feira update 🐾❤️

Today we had another consultation with the vet, and so far, we’re seeing some positive effects from the prednisone. Feira is scratching less, and her tummy seems a little calmer too, with less rumbling. It’s definitely not resolved, but it’s encouraging to see some improvement. Even though it is not as much as the vet expected (and we hoped for).

The vet has decided to increase her dose over the coming week, and then we’ll reassess. The goal is to gradually reduce the prednisone to the lowest possible dose that keeps her symptoms under control, which she would then need to take for the rest of her life. For now, this seems to be the best option available, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed that it will work. If not, things could get quite complicated.

Thankfully, the side effects have been manageable so far. Feira is hungry ALL day long, which is frustrating for her, but we’re managing. She’s also drinking a lot more and needs to pee more often, but so far, everything remains within reasonable limits.

For now, we’re cautiously optimistic, but still worried ❤️

To be continued… 🐶

P.S. She looks a bit messy in the photo, but we had just returned from a walk in the rain.
