Jennifer Check means everything to me because she, like so many women, was convinced at a young age that her worth was based in her beauty and sexuality, and that male validation was essential. She was taken advantage of while doing what the patriarchy taught her she was “best at”; men did not hesitate to destroy her life and mental health for their own benefit (a benefit that never actually existed).

When I was her age, I was Jennifer Check. I believed my sexuality was my best asset, I acted accordingly, and when it violently backfired against me it became my weapon of destruction.

Jennifer Check means everything to me because her story about cycles of trauma was advertised as a “hot n sexy monster movie w the girl from Transformers”. Because there are a thousand thirst edits of her walking down the hallway and lighting her tongue on fire, but little to no discussion about her trauma, the complexities of her sexuality, and the mechanics of why she becomes the “villain”.

I’ve been down the “weird girl” to “slut” to “man-hating bitch” to “mostly healed” pipeline, I am Jennifer and Jennifer is me. Jennifer is so many women and she is still misunderstood. One day she will get the justice she deserves. by @throughclearwaterss
