These narrow water channels are historically known as Bächle (small brooks). They are a famous medieval feature found in the streets of cities in the region—most notably in nearby Freiburg im Breisgau

Historical Uses
Dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, these stone-lined gutters served several critical, practical purposes for the town’s residents:
    •    Fighting Fires: Water could be quickly dammed and diverted to extinguish fires in timber-framed medieval buildings.
    •
    •    Watering Livestock: They functioned as continuous street-level troughs for horses and other farm animals.
    •
    •    Industrial & Household Use: Local tradespeople (like tanners) used the fresh water flow for their crafts, and residents used it to clean the streets.

Modern Use

Wandering in Breisach in the early morning seeing homes straight out of fairy tales. 🏠 Empty streets but the sound of kids’ laughter during recess at a nearby school. A morning we didn’t anticipate - just chose to go for a walk. Turmaufgang: A tower ascent is the ascent path in the form of stairs, ramps or ladders that leads to a tower, vantage point or church tower….so off we went and climbed the 209 steps to the top of the Freiburg Minster.
