Just been announced that I will be performing at Octobers edition of @throughlinesleeds on the 8th alongside the most wonderful @chrisbrainmusic and @mollyrymermusic . Despite my recent mess up with missing Sunday’s Leeds show, I’m trying to make up for it by doing another one next month. Delighted to be stepping into a songwriter space to share and try new ideas. Intend to step out my comfort zone on this one.

For example, my set may feature myself and a piano. This is fun because I’m not particularly good at piano. Here’s a new a song from this week. Lots of love y’all x by @throughlinesleeds

What’s your process?

It was another memorable night at the Cardi on Thursday as this month’s songwriters all delivered stunning performances of work-in-progress material, sharing with us their processes. The Cardigan Arms is very very lucky to be surrounded by so much passion.

Join us again in September for our part concert, part songwriting experiment as three more exceptional artists take on the challenge of writing to the secret prompt.

This Thursday we have the next edition of @throughlinesleeds at @thecardiganarms, featuring the wonderful @heresthesteeplemusic, @tjhammond_ and @zoecure_music, hosted by our very own @sol_edwards .

If you've heard any of these fine folks before, I know that you won't need any more persuading than that - having said that, it does bear mentioning that Tom, in all his madness and wisdom, has written and recorded a WHOLE NEW ALBUM JUST FOR THE NIGHT, which will be available to purchase.

Come on down, this is going to be a good one.

I was supposed to perform at @thecardiganarms yesterday as part of @throughlinesleeds but alas, my shoulder had other plans as you can see.

The concept of the show is for the musicians to write a song to a super secret prompt ahead of the show. Of course, I nerded out about the concept and was gutted to not be able to share the song I’d written (along with a whole bunch of new tunes I’ve been squirrelling away).

I thought I’d at least get a recording of the tune to share online and write a bit about my process here for anyone interested.

What was the secret prompt I hear you ask…

THE REST IS SILENCE

I started by brainstorming some associations with the prompt in my notebook whilst sharing a veggie pepperoni pizza with my girlfriend. This didn’t get me far with writing the song (mainly just some mind maps about sleep and the sea) but it was a tasty starting point.

I then saw a video on Instagram from our lord and saviour Doechii (@gutsgritglamour) talking about her plans for a week long retreat/creative-cup-refilling. She discussed her thoughts on why much of new art is referential and relying on nostalgia instead of feeling fresh, because most of us are pulling from the same well of inspiration - from social media and the algorithm black holes we find ourselves in. Her solution was to spend the week researching from a list of online archives, books and Substack articles instead.

As a way to use this idea in my songwriting, I decided to look through some of my non-fiction books for chapter names with links to prompt and see where that took me. I found a chapter titled A QUIET LIFE in the How To Survive The Modern World by @theschooloflifelondon which got me on the right tracks.

Long story short, this song is about the concept of a quiet life being an act of resistance to the constant noise of our crazy modern world. Hey, maybe I am playing into our nostalgia after all.

Thanks to @throughlinesleeds for the songwriting side quest. Hopefully I can do it all again with you soon - but actually play the gig next time. Special thanks also to @alex_honour for being my arms and writing this beautiful guitar part. by @throughlinesleeds

Throughlines! Tonight! Here I am trying to answer your burning questions like: can a song just be all the minor chords?? And what's the big deal about being "in a key" anyway??

Unfortunately the wonderful @tinesha.kinley has had to pull out because of an injury - we're wishing her a speedy recovery, and I'll be trying to fill her enormous shoes with a set of my songs, probably a bit of a retrospective of everything I've written for this night so far, as well as a brand new song based on this month's secret prompt.

You've got new music from the wonderful @__theluca__ and @wychbury.band to look forward to - @thecardiganarms, doors 7.15, PAYF on the door or you can make a donation in advance online to secure your spot. See you there! by @throughlinesleeds

We can't wait for the next Throughlines at @thecardiganarms this Thursday - have you got your ticket yet?

In the meantime, we're loving reliving our January edition (featuring @brodiemilnermusic, @lizzziewalmsley and @araya.music) via these lovely shots by the wonderful @megachickenproductions / @samwes35mm - thanks Sam!

See you at the Cardi on 11th June for some new songs and stories taken in The Cardigan Arms by @throughlinesleeds

Tomorrow I’ll be part of a songwriting sharing at @thecardiganarms as part of @throughlinesleeds. I’ve been working on this song, which I’m excited to share. It’s about being part of a queer chosen family and observing the real grief so many in the queer community experience trying to navigate their adult lives alongside family of origin. It’s been hard to write, but refreshing to put it into the little tuppoware container songs can be (weird metaphor? But trying to articulate the sense that songs keep tricky things safe to explore and access?)

ANYWAY, really looking forward to sharing the night with @sunflowerthieves (who I went to uni with back in the day and who I think are v cool) and @annekashelley who’s music I’ve been enjoying discovering through this cool gig! Was also put together by @hgsorme who’s also super cool (fun fact, first gig I ever saw in Leeds was Harry supporting Emily Portman and I was HOOKED)

((Also; almost didn’t post this video because I’m doing my still writing a song rocking back-and-forth, but who doesn’t love a stim))

SEE YOU TOMORROW! Soz for the chaos of this text, it’s not been to my proof reader because im deep in hyperfocus xoxox by @throughlinesleeds
