What many King County residents have suspected to be the case has just been confirmed by the University of Washington’s Center for Human Rights (UWCHR): Washington experienced a “historic surge,” in immigration-related arrests this year. This past June, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) grabbed 705 community members, with 669 being at-large arrests, meaning they took place in the community, like on the sides of roads, workplaces, and homes.

Out of June’s 705 arrests, 33 were custodial, meaning ICE and Customs and Border Patrol grabbed people who were released from prison or jail. Between January-July this year, King and Yakima counties experienced the most arrests, although per capita, Yakima and Chelan counties had the highest number of arrests, according to UWCHR, which obtained this data through Freedom of Information Act requests.

“ICE doesn’t tell us how many are accompanied by violence; how many take place in the presence of children; or how many are preceded by the issuance of a lawful warrant. In fact, what community members and observers report is that many appear to be acts of opportunistic racial profiling, carried out by masked agents driving unmarked vehicles in ways that sow terror among affected communities,” according to UWCHR.

Iran played against Egypt for a FIFA World Cup match on June 26, 2026, in Seattle, WA. About 400 community members took part in "The People's Football Match," in Pioneer Square, which was organized to bring communities together to reclaim football as being for the people, and to stand in solidarity with Iranians, Palestinians, and Lebanese people in opposition to U.S. and Israeli violence.

🗞 EDITORIAL

Fifty-seven men. Fifty-seven men complicit in a gang rape. Seven who carried out direct harm, as 50 sat idly by, letting Jane Doe get ravaged for seven hours by Cornell students in the Chi Phi fraternity. She was only 20-years-old when this took place almost two years ago, and her life has been forever changed.

Rape isn’t about sexual pleasure, but power and control. For the Chi Phi fraternity, that night was about control and boy’s club bonding. Men are too afraid of losing their social status among each other, and would gladly let a woman get gang-raped, if not worse. That’s the world we live in. That is how parents have raised their children.

The larger issue at hand is what we have normalized. We have become comfortable debating who is responsible, what the minimum punishment should be and how quickly everyone can move on. Meanwhile, the survivor doesn’t get to move on just because everyone else has decided the story is over.

We need to demand more from men, bystanders, fraternities, and universities. We need to stop treating intervention as some extraordinary act of heroism, instead of the basic responsibility of being a decent human being. We need to stop allowing “not all men” to derail conversations that are not about every man in the first place. And we need institutions to understand that protecting students means more than protecting their own reputation.

An essay can be written in a couple hours. Rebuilding a life after sexual violence, however, can last a lifetime. taken in Seattle, Washington by @throughthestatic_

Today, 11,000 immigrants in Washington state were kicked off of Medicaid due to Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," which slashed over $1.3 trillion in healthcare and food assistance benefits nationwide.

A total of 14,000 immigrants in WA were expected to lose their Apple Health coverage on Oct. 1, but that number dropped due to state outreach efforts.

Healthcare navigators, providers, community partners, and the Office of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance engaged in outreach efforts, guiding some in updating their personal information or altering their immigration status so they can continue to qualify and receive benefits.

But these slashes will also impact non-immigrants in WA: for the first time, Apple Health recipients will be forced to undergo work requirements, and apply twice as often in order to maintain coverage.

🗞 Catch-up on our reporting by visiting ThroughtheStatic.org (link in bio) and typing "Medicaid," into the search engine. Be sure to subscribe to our free newsletter while there so you don't mise any coverage! taken in Seattle, Washington by @throughthestatic_

ICYMI: Community Not Cameras passed our 6-month mark a couple of weeks ago, and look at the earned-media that has already published us!

Originally launched in late March as a grassroots education campaign and coalition of individuals in collaboration with local organizations, we have already accomplished so much at shaping the narrative, speaking truth to power, and building up communal knowledge about Seattle’s expansion of the surveillance state. And in the process, we strive to live our values, investing in relationships with each other and lifting up the community voices that continue to be marginalized by policymakers.

If you haven’t already, now’s your chance to join our signal chat (via linktree in bio) to get plugged in and collaborate as we continue the fight to dismantle the local police surveillance apparatus! taken in Seattle, Washington by @throughthestatic_
