Black Texas athletes have always dominated sports. They have tried to keep us out, but they can’t.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
History was made under the bright lights of the Home Run Derby.

Jordan Walker became the first Black player to win the MLB Home Run Derby since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1999, ending a 27-year drought and reminding a new generation that Black excellence has always been woven into the fabric of baseball.

What makes the moment even more remarkable is that Walker entered the Derby as one of the least likely competitors to win. But he defied the odds, outslugged the field, and became the first St. Louis Cardinal to ever capture the Home Run Derby crown.

His victory caps off a breakout season in which he’s emerged as one of baseball’s brightest young stars, leading Major League Baseball in RBIs while launching 22 home runs before the All-Star break.

Jordan Walker’s win is bigger than one night. It’s a celebration of perseverance, representation, and the continued impact of Black athletes on America’s pastime. Moments like these inspire the next generation to dream bigger and believe they belong on baseball’s biggest stage.

🥲⛽️ “Do you remember when gas was $1.33?”

In Me, Myself & Irene, Jim Carrey passes a gas station advertising gas for just $1.33 a gallon. Now, here we are in Texas, where gas is over $5 a gallon. 😭

You know what I could do if gas was $1.33? FILL UP MY TANK WITHOUT HAVING TO CHECK MY BANK ACCOUNT FIRST. 💀

Used to be a quick stop at the pump. Now, it’s a financial decision. We really out here choosing between a full tank and groceries. 🥴

Man, we’re living in a comedy, but nobody’s laughing. 💔

🏆 30 YEARS OF HONORING BLACK EXCELLENCE!

For three decades, the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame has celebrated the athletes, coaches, journalists and community leaders who have shaped sports in Texas and beyond.

The Hall of Fame marked its 30th anniversary in Dallas with a weekend celebration and a sold-out induction luncheon honoring 14 influential figures in its 2026 class. Among the honorees were legendary NFL coach Lovie Smith, NBA veteran C.J. Miles Jr., MLB standout Jerry Mumphrey and longtime sports journalist Dwain Price. 🏈🏀⚾

Beyond the accolades, this milestone represents something bigger: preserving the stories, recognizing the contributions and celebrating the impact of Black excellence in sports for generations to come.

30 years of history. 30 years of impact. A legacy worth celebrating.

💰 Texas NIL is BIG business.

The Longhorns’ 2026 football NIL market is estimated at roughly $50 million, according to The Sideline, with the overall Texas athletics NIL market estimated at $76.9 million. That is an independent market estimate, not a confirmed school payroll or total of signed contracts.

And at the center of the conversation is Texas QB Arch Manning, whose On3 NIL valuation has been reported at $6.8 million.

Now, the rules could be changing.

The U.S. Senate passed the Protect College Sports Act 77-22, sending it to the House. The legislation would establish a federal framework for NIL and athlete compensation while creating rules around revenue sharing, NIL disclosures and transfers.

For Texas, that could have major implications.

The Longhorns have built a massive NIL operation in one of the most competitive conferences in college football. A federal framework could provide more consistency, but it could also change how Texas distributes money among its athletes and how third-party NIL opportunities operate.

And for a player with a $6.8M NIL valuation, the question becomes even bigger:

How much of that value can an athlete actually earn, and how will the new rules change the marketplace?

College football is becoming more like a professional business every year. Texas is already playing in that market. Now Congress is trying to put rules around it.

$3 MILLION. That’s the current NIL valuation of Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed.

The Aggies QB has already put up 722 passing yards and 6 touchdowns through four games this season, while building a valuable personal brand off the field.

But the rules surrounding money in college sports could be changing again.

The U.S. Senate recently passed the Protect College Sports Act, 77-22, which would establish a federal framework for NIL and college-athlete compensation. The bill would give athletes a federal right to earn NIL money while also creating limits and regulations around compensation and revenue sharing. It still needs to pass the House before becoming law.

For players like Marcel Reed, that could mean more structure around how they earn, disclose and receive money while in college.

The bill would also adopt a revenue-sharing framework with a current cap and create a $22.5 million retention fund that could provide additional money directly to athletes, potentially increasing to $27.5 million under certain conditions.

The bigger conversation is this:

If a college quarterback can generate millions in value for a university, how much control should he have over the money his name, image and performance generate?

NIL changed college sports. Now Congress is trying to define what comes next.

Marcel Reed is one example of why this conversation matters.

The college sports landscape could be entering another major chapter.

The U.S. Senate passed the bipartisan Protect College Sports Act, 77-22, establishing a potential national framework for NIL, revenue sharing, transfers, eligibility and athlete protections. The bill now moves to the House, so these provisions are not yet law. (Senate Commerce Committee)

What could this mean for college athletes?

➕ More financial opportunities: The bill establishes a federal right for athletes to earn NIL compensation and expands opportunities for schools to compensate athletes through revenue sharing and retention funds. (Senate Commerce Committee)

➕ More protections: It includes scholarship and healthcare protections, restrictions on predatory agent practices, and measures designed to protect women’s and Olympic sports. (Senate Commerce Committee)

➕ National NIL rules: Instead of navigating different state laws, athletes and schools would operate under a federal NIL framework.

➖ Less transfer freedom: Athletes would generally get one transfer without sitting out. A second transfer could require sitting out a season, with exceptions. (Reuters)

➖ More regulation: NIL deals above $600 would have to be disclosed, while the bill would give the NCAA greater authority to enforce national rules. (Reuters)

➖ Athlete rights remain debated: The legislation does not resolve whether college athletes should be classified as employees, an issue that could continue to shape collective bargaining and labor rights. (Reuters)

The bigger question is what happens when the rules change again.

NIL has already given college athletes unprecedented control over their earning potential and career decisions. The Protect College Sports Act could bring more structure to that system, but it could also place new limits on the freedom athletes have gained through NIL and the transfer portal.

College athletes are no longer simply participants in college sports. They are stakeholders in a multibillion-dollar industry.

Before Hollywood told the story, Wiley College was already making history.

Founded in Marshall, Texas in 1873, Wiley College became a beacon of education for Black Texans just years after the end of slavery. In a time when access to education was intentionally restricted, Wiley gave a generation the opportunity to learn, think, speak and lead.

Then came the Great Debaters.

Under professor and debate coach Melvin B. Tolson, Wiley’s debate team challenged some of the country’s top institutions. In 1935, the team defeated the University of Southern California, the defending national champion. That historic victory later became the inspiration for Denzel Washington’s 2007 film The Great Debaters. (Texas Historical Commission)

But Wiley’s impact goes far beyond the debate stage.

For generations, this HBCU has served as a pillar of Black education in Texas — producing scholars, leaders and change agents who carried what they learned from Marshall into communities far beyond its campus. Students like James Farmer Jr. would go on to become major figures in the Civil Rights Movement. (Texas Historical Commission)

Education was freedom.
Education was opportunity.
Education was power.

And Wiley College helped Black Texans turn that power into progress.

The legacy of the Great Debaters isn’t just about winning an argument. It’s about understanding the power of an educated mind and using your voice to change the world.
