The drink that made up my childhood, and the piece that made me cry in adulthood (in nostalgia, elation, and frustration*).

When I saw @byalicelee’s Asian snack series, this milk drink was the first thing I thought of. I remember always trying to sneak some into our cart whenever we trekked to the Asian grocery store in Florida. Or how my grandparents would always have a case of it waiting for me when I went to visit them in China. This little red can (sometimes juice box) is entrenched in some of the best memories of my childhood.

It took 6 months of art anxiety ✨, countless hours of hand cramps and second-guessing, but by the grace of the kiln gods, this piece has finally made it home with me.

*frustration mostly because I found out the translation for this drink is “hot kid milk”??! 😬🙅🏻‍♀️ by @thrown.af

1. Throw cylinder and worry about consistency
2. Trim cylinder, worry about how heavy it is
3. Attach handle, worry about it cracking
4. Underglaze that b with alternating gradient 🌈 rainbow lines 🌈
5. Bisque, worry about it exploding
6. Glaze, worry about it crazing
7. Touch up the alternating gradient
8. Fire
9. Repeat steps 1-8 by @thrown.af

The camera roll wasn’t cutting it anymore.

I’ve decided to overcome my social media anxiety to document some of the pieces I’ve been making for the past couple of years!
