THANK YOU, EDINBURGH!

Thanks for letting us tell our story for five years.
Thanks for letting us grow from a tiny show to a huge one.
Thanks for coming back to see us over and over and over again, and making us into a cult classic.

We turned up in Edinburgh with nothing and are leaving with everything. Like true Vikings 😉 I don't know whether we will be back next year. The times, they are a-changin... If that was our last show, it was one hell of an exit.

Thank you to the staff and tech crew of @assembly_rooms_edinburgh for making our run so smooth and easy.

Thank you to @cinemachef_uk for capturing the lovely moment.

I grew up with the Absurdity of Camus' Sisyphus, the Nausea and Bad Faith of Sartre's Existentialism, Nietzche's indomitable Will to Power, Kant's Categorical Imperative, the Truely Free vibes of Spinoza, Aristotle's eudaimonia, the timeless stoicism of Seneca (et al), Rand's hand-smashing individualism, the grim defiance in Orwell's dystopias and of course, the all-engrossing Fear and Loathing contained in the brain of Hunter S. Thompson.

Nevertheless, sometimes it takes The Bhagavad Gita to hit the nail on the head: "Thy right is only to thine labour, never to its fruits; let not the fruit of action be thy motive."

Never has this felt more true than going into the penultimate weekend of EdFringe: battered, bruised and held together by sheer defiance (and Rock Tape, which is literally the ONLY thing that can survive this sort of abuse).

Halfway through my FIFTH full run at Edinburgh Fringe, this time in a 670 seat theatre.

I now have 251 performances of this phenomenal show under my belt and it is the best it has ever been.

Oh, I'm also looking for an agent.

SHOW NUMBER 250!

Last night was the 250th performance of Mythos: Ragnarök, a show that I wrote five years ago with the intention of performing it four times at the Cockpit Theatre in London.

I have given everything to this production. It has been scarred into my body and scorched across my bank account for over 1750 days... but it has given me so much in return.

Mythos: Raganrök has taken me all around the world, turned my life into a ceaseless adventure, honed me as an actor and an athlete, and made me a best-selling producer and international director.

It has given me the best of times with the best of people, and it has given me some of the hardest and worst experiences of my life - which have made me stronger, wiser and more tenacious than I have ever been.

Best and most importantly of all, it has allowed me to build a career that lets me spend every day with the love of my life. I couldn't and wouldn't do this without you, @mel_on_earth_

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey, and thank you to my brother @miles_ley for capturing one of the extremely rare photos of me and Mel 🖤

One of the hardest things about being a performing artist is enduring the time between opportunities to perform.

A writer can write at home; a musician can play to nobody; a performance artist needs an audience. Thus we must do everything possible to make our own opportunities, rather than timidly sit back and wait for them to arise, as if the universe owns it to us.

That's why I am going back to Edinburgh Fringe next week for my fifth consecutive year. You can moan all you like about the Fringe: it remains the biggest opportunity for performing artists. We go there to prove ourselves.

So I have. Time and time and time time again, to rise from the bottom of the pile to one of the top-selling acts of the whole festival. The only acts bigger than Mythos: Ragnarök are now on the West End. We aren't, obviously, because we aren't a musical...

Does being an established headliner make life easier? You tell me: I have to sell over £150,000 of tickets in the next four weeks in order to not LOSE money. How's that for pressure?

That's my money, by the way. Nobody GIVES me the funds to put on a headline act at the Fringe: I scrape the cash together, pound by miserable pound, in tickets and T-Shirts and stunt jobs and voice over work - and I risk every God damn penny of it on the belief that my show is one of the greatest experiences of the biggest arts festival or Earth.

And it is. Categorically. Unequivocally. We have proven it over and over again, and we will prove it once more as the headline act of the biggest venue of the iconic Assembly Music Rooms.

After that? Europe. After that? Wait and see.

Thank you, England!

Impossible to believe it had been THREE YEARS since we last toured at home! It was so good to be back and we will miss you until next time...whenever that might be 🖤

Until then, we are at Edinburgh Fringe with @assemblyfest all throughout August and then touring across Europe until Christmas.

After that... Let's find out.
