Catch up with some of our team at the AMaGA National Conference at Old Parliament House next week!

Caolan Mitchell (Director) and Josie Parkes (Graphic Designer) will be attending on Tuesday, and Bruce Head (Project and Program Manager) and Lis Cherry (Senior Graphic Designer) will be attending Wednesday.

We’d love to connect and share ideas with colleagues from across the sector.

We are very happy to share that our second Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan has been bubbling away in the background, reaching its halfway point this month, and coinciding with the arrival of our commissioned cover artwork and sculpture from Canberra-based artist Jennifer Kemarre Martiniello OAM.

Martiniello’s hot blown glass works appropriate contemporary European art glass techniques several hundred years old to give expression to traditional Aboriginal weaving practices that are many millennia old. In so doing she pays tribute to the oldest living weaving traditions in the world while simultaneously creating artworks that can be interpreted within the aesthetics of both.

Of Lower Southern Arrernte (Australian Central Desert), Chinese and Anglo-Celtic descent, Martiniello embraces more than 80,000 years of Aboriginal Australian culture through her Grandmothers’ Law, identity and personal relationship to Country. In using glass, a non-traditional medium adapted from centuries-old techniques to make traditional and non-traditional Aboriginal forms, Martiniello explores the juxtapositions and potentials of cultural practices and filters them through her creative lens.

Thylacine delivers interpretation in a variety of public environments and locations, including National Parks, museums, and galleries. These spaces have been, and continue to be, sites of colonial oppression for First Nations peoples. While recent years have witnessed an active attempt by the sector to improve on this legacy, we recognise that it remains a part of the lived experience of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Thylacine takes seriously our unique capacity to contribute in a tangible way to this industry-wide shift, and our Reconciliation Action Plan plays a large role in holding us accountable as an organisation for putting that commitment into action.

Great design starts with listening. We acknowledge the enduring knowledge and leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, whose care for Country and communities spans generations. Their knowledge is essential to shaping a more sustainable future. Supporting Treaty is about recognising First Nations wisdom, leadership, and self-determination. When we listen, learn, and work together, we create a stronger future for everyone.

We encourage our community to join the movement fighting to retain Treaty in Victoria in the lead up to the state election!

Working closely with the Parks Victoria team, Thylacine designed an interpretive exhibition for the recently redeveloped Tidal River Visitor Centre, highlighting the natural, conservation and historical stories of Wilsons Promontory.

Located at the heart of Wilsons Promontory National Park at the southernmost tip of mainland Australia, Tidal River is the Park’s main visitor hub and an extremely popular and picturesque campground.

Thylacine initially provided early interpretive consultation for Parks Victoria in 2022, supporting the proposal to revitalise the Visitor Centre. In 2025, as architectural upgrades were nearing completion, we returned to design, fabricate, and install the new interpretive exhibition and select external signage.

A 3-metre, scale landscape model of the Prom features in the centre of the space, with detailed routed and painted rivers, walking tracks and place names.

An undulating wall grid frames the exhibition, incorporating wrapped boxes in varied depths and colours inspired by the Prom’s landscape and layered environmental features.

Touch-screen media kiosks provide an added layer of connection and support for visitors, alongside large media screens integrated within the wall grids to show footage of the amazing features of the landscape on offer.

A rediscovered collection.

Caolan’s mechanical tin toys have been packed away for a while, now returned to display and appreciated again for their movement, detail and character.

This brings the Thy Collects series to a close. Thank you for following along with us.

What do you collect? We’d love to hear below.

A living collection.

Josie’s indoor plants have grown steadily over time, filling every available surface and turning a small home into a lush jungle.

Do you have a collection that’s taken over your space?

A collection driven by curiosity and culture.

Shaun’s objects span eras and places, from papier mache masks to home movies, each item chosen for its story and intrigue.

Do you collect something niche and quirky?

A collection shaped by everyday life.

Hugh’s mid-century furniture, mugs and glassware have been gathered over time, finding a sweet spot between considered design and the realities of a busy home.

Like Hugh and his triple-glazed mugs, do you have a one-in, one-out rule for your collection?

A collection built thoughtfully, piece by piece.

Siobhan’s blue and white plate collection began with a kitchen renovation and has gradually grown into a considered display.

Do you have a collection you’ve built slowly over time?

A childhood collection that’s just finding its way back.

Alex’s Lai Khram, blue and white Thai ceramics were collected in Bangkok and have quietly travelled through different chapters, now slowly growing again.

Do you have something you’ve kept since you were young?

At Thylacine, we design spaces for incredible collections, but this time we’re turning inward. Thy Collects explores the personal treasures our team can’t help but gather – quirky, meaningful, and unexpected.

Because collecting isn’t just for museums, it’s human.

What do you collect? Tell us below!

Thylacine is celebrating NAIDOC Week by showing up, listening, learning and honouring 50 years of NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) activities.

Across our team, we’ve been attending events that celebrate the rich cultures, histories and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In Canberra, our team attended Murrudha: Sovereign Walks – Track 14 at the ANU School of Art and Design gallery, followed by its opening night, which honoured the powerful 150km sovereign walk by Nangar, Ooloogan and Marvellous from Brungle Station across the Brindabella Range to Canberra. They walked to be present at the opening of the new federal Parliament House 9 -10 May 1927 in the recently established national capital, Canberra.

The exhibition features art, craft, Country, language and music and opened with Aunty Dr Matilda House singing up Country and a beautiful performance from the Djinama Yalaga choir.

Murrudah is curated by Professor Brenda L Croft and is a must see if you are in Canberra or passing through.

In Melbourne, our team visited Camp Stove, an exhibition and program series on the craft of Queer Blak survival at Craft Victoria, reimagining found objects to spark conversations about community, resistance and environmental justice. Curated by Kate ten Buuren (Taungurung) and Artists, Gabi Briggs, Karla Dickens, ENOKi, Dennis Golding & Yangamini Collective.

Meanwhile, Hugh our Interpretive Designer residing in Newcastle, attended the local flag-raising ceremony and marched alongside hundreds of others to mark the beginning of NAIDOC Week.

We encourage everyone to set aside some time this weekend to tune in and get involved in events and screenings happening in person across the country and on our broadcast channels.
